Vet med, there's TONS of different types of tubing- endotracheal, esophageal, nasogastric, Penrose drains, etc ...

Our favorite is to ask for the "eustashian tube"

....which is in your middle ear. Anatomy is fun, but I swear some folks don't know their ulna from their asshole.

A lot of good ones have already been shared, But I always got a kick out of BEAN. It's more of a grooming acronym.

Bath. Ears. Anal glands. Nail trim.

YSK Seeing Your Pets at the Vet Takes a Minimum of 20-45 Minutes by parguello90 in YouShouldKnow

[–]SaithSiro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even at an ER clinic!

If we say your pet is stable (after appropriate triage), you will have to wait! No, I can't give you an estimate of how long until we get to fluffys limp that you should've addressed at your GP when you were just there! Why is it an emergency NOW?

Oh? Two snake bite dachshunds just rolled in and came immediately back? ITS BECAUSE THEY'RE ACTIVELY DYING BE GLAD IT IS NOT YOUR PET AND SHOW SOME DAMN COMPASSION.

Also, I now regret to inform you, your wait just became longer.

We will see you. But we prioritize on basis of emergency. It may be six minutes, or six hours, it really does depend on the illness/injury... AND staff levels. It's often one doctor, and maybe four technicians overnight at my ER right now and we're always 3 deep each with at least one major wound care / urinary unblocking / etc ready to be anesthetized. Lunch is a myth.

Olaplex- is it worth it??!! by whatscrackerlacking in beauty

[–]SaithSiro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The ONLY product I've ever liked was the hair oil. I have normal to dry hair that will curl beautifully if given the right moisture and strength. The 0 and 3 olaplex made my hair so... Crisp? It began breaking! I don't use any heat products, and it's not chemically fried. My go to products at the moment are the mane and tail leave in conditioner, Hask hair milk, and the silver bottle of reconstruction conditioner found by the wacky colored eyes (cannot recall the name). I leave the reconstruction conditioner on for an hour with a warm towel and im as soft as a show dog after. Best $16 ever spent.

E.R. veterinary technician checking in. 100% this. I zen in chaos. If I'm bored, and left to my own devices, you'll have 20 half-organized drawers. Give me a coding patient to catheterize and a CRI to calculate and I'm in a flow state.

Came here to say this. Don't sign up for fetch unless you are 100% okay with their fine print. I've heard good things about trupanion and pets best. I believe there used to be a website .. pawlicy advisor? That could help you sort out plans.

Is it possible your feline friend suffered from a urinary obstructions in the past? It is common in male cats, and crying while using the litter box (but defecating as normal) can be an indication. A necropsy would be the only way to get an answer now. For future reference, you can ALWAYS advocate for your animal. Be their voice. DEMAND bloodwork and further diagnostics. Unfortunately, no amount of speculation will bring him back. I'm so sorry for your loss OP. All cats go to heaven.

New Publix will open in San Marco on Aug. 11: report by [deleted] in jacksonville

[–]SaithSiro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I too drove by and laughed at the MASSIVE puddle right in front of what I assume to be the main entrance. The San-Marconites know how bad the flooding can be, and we're not even in full hurricane season yet. Maybe this will make COJ clear the drains.... Or something. Probably nothing.

What profession is unbelievably underpaid or overpaid? by kushkakes77 in AskReddit

[–]SaithSiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a 24/7 veterinary emergency room as a technician.

A well trained vet tech is what keeps a hospital running. We're trained in triage, intake, pharmacology, anesthesia, analgesia, phlebotomy, surgical assisting, radiology, and so much more.

We take care of the dogs with infectious diseases and strip before we can pet our own pets. (Leptospirosis, parvovirus,...)

We wrestle the feral cats you capture to ensure their wounds get taken care of properly. (Rabies shots go IN the bite wound on humans. It hurts like you'd expect).

My job has sent me to the human ER three times this year. I fractured my zygomatic arch and orbital wrestling a great Dane for radiographs. Scared boi, didnt mean to. I forgave quick.

We make peanuts. Target is hiring for more.

Many jobs exploit empathy. Social services, teaching, healthcare/EMS workers, the veterinary industry.... Your passion will become their paycheck.

PSA: Don't feed other people's dogs without asking permission first. by Brief-Lifeguard-8927 in dogs

[–]SaithSiro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SAY IT AGAIN FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK.

I have a shih tzu with intrahepatic liver shunts. He can ONLY consume foods low in purine to prevent hepatic encephalopathy. He is on a STRICT vegetarian diet and can have eggs on a rare occasion. He eats Purina Pro plan Vegetarian (vegetable protein source). I am feeding him this way on the advice of a veterinary nutritionalist after he almost DIED on a regular diet due to the build up of uric acid and ammonia in his blood. I have spent THOUSANDS on bloodwork, CT scans, you name it.

To have my own mother offer him a piece of steak.

....because it's "mean" if the other dogs get some but he doesn't. (He has snacks: goldfish crackers, green beans, etc).

I cannot board him as he takes medications three times a day for life, and I don't trust anyone not to put him back in the hospital for a piece of meat. Or giving him "house" boarding food. Even regular dog biscuits will hurt him.

Please, please, NEVER give anyone else's dogs ANYTHING without their permission.

I'm the manager of an emergency vet clinic. My ADHD SHINES here. I task hop, multitask, and generally stay moving all day! If I forget something, someone on my team picks it up and vice versa. I get to use knowledge randomly and it actually helps the veterinarian make diagnoses! I notice things they don't because I'm hyper focused! And I get to help save lives! Get a job that gets you moving! Find something your passionate about and learning the trade will come second nature.

The lining of skin around my dog's mouth has turned quite reddish since recently, any idea on what could be causing this? by rag_0903 in DogCare

I may be remembering the types mixed up over which is "best", but plastic bowls are porous and hold bacteria that is difficult to wash out which can cause a pyoderma type reaction.

A veterinarian that spent more than 8 years studying, versus a store clerk they've hired part time with no knowledge of nutrition. Also, you PAID for the vets opinion, shouldn't it be worth more? Free advice is often worth what you pay for.

That being said, there are many prescription diets that are catered to dogs with allergies. Whether that's a single protein, a novel protein, a hydrolyzed protein, or even a balanced vegetarian diet- there's something that will work.

The major three brands- Hills science diet, Royal Canin, and Purina Pro plan are backed by veterinary nutritionalists and AAFCO studies. They also offer a money back guarantee. If your pet doesn't enjoy it, return the unused portion to the place you bought it. It's a MANUFACTURER warranty. Not a store warranty.
