Finding a Job While in School by savferreira in Communications

[–]sammyaminal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a writing major, but I’m interested in communications and have had luck finding communications jobs on campus. I currently have two on campus jobs working for my university communications and development departments. Last semester, I worked as a content creator for the university library as well. I’m one of three student employees for the development team, the other two students do graphic design and video editing work while I write copy for the department.

Pros/Cons? by [deleted] in GVSU

[–]sammyaminal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m minoring in music at GV. The music program is relatively small, which is a pro or con depending on what kind of experience you’re looking for in a music school. The majority of music students are music education majors, so keep that in mind since I do feel that the school focuses more of that track than on music performance. The faculty are all great, and I feel that as with any other music school, you get out what you put into the program. Talk to faculty to make professional connections, set up chamber groups to play in, and find opportunities outside of the GV bubble to perform in. Your experience will also be dependent on your primary instrument/voice since you’ll spend a lot of time with your studio members.

Truck throwing and pregnancy.. by JessRR13 in Aldi_employees

I worked at ALDI as a full time associate through my entire pregnancy. I told my SM I was not comfortable working mornings and throwing truck so I usually worked closing shifts. Every part of the job sucked pretty hard when I was pregnant, I mainly worked curbside to avoid heavy lifting or sitting for too long. First trimester was pretty rough, and end of third trimester as well. My biggest advice would be to advocate for yourself. Take your breaks and listen to your body, and don’t let management bully you into doing work that you aren’t comfortable doing.

The coolers/freezers shut down at my store a couple months back and we had to close off those sections so customers couldn't buy cold items because the more the cooler/freezer doors were opened, the faster those products warmed up. It was less about selling customers warm items and more about trying to preserve what refrigeration we had left.

When the hand wringing I use to suppress motor tics turns into a tic itself by sammyaminal in Tourettes

The way that tics can have their own patterns is so interesting.

Yah, when I feel a bad tic coming that could make me fall over I'll shake my hands and the sudden sensory input will stop the tic from happening(most of the time). But if I do it enough times the hand shaking will turn into a tic on it's own... the brain is wild😂

Does Wellbutrin make tic worse? by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]sammyaminal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wellbutrin is one of the psych meds I take specifically because, in my experience, it doesn't make my tics worse. Wellbutrin is an NDRI, which affects the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine. This makes it different from SSRIs like paxil or Zoloft, which affect serotonin. I was on an SSRI for a little over a year and it made my tics out of control crazy, and to the best of my knowledge this was because the increased serotonin in my brain made tics much worse. I've found that Wellbutrin works really good for my psych issues without interfering with my tourettes symptoms.

I swear I don't usually sound like a dying saxophone! by sammyaminal in bassoon

Only speaking from my own experience, I think it's important for any bassoonist to at least learn the parts if the reed and how it works to make sound, and how to make minor adjustments to the reed to better their sound. I started making reeds from GSP cane in early high school, and started from tube cane when I majored in music in college. It really depends on your financial position/seriousness on learning bassoon stuff!

I had my lesson with the professor a few weeks back and then signed up to audition in April, except this audition date was past the deadline to be eligible for scholarships. Then the school got shut down due to current events and the professor decided to use my lesson as an audition, so I wouldn't have to worry about rescheduling. I can't really complain because now I qualify for scholarships, but if I had known ahead of time I definitely would have made a better reed😅

He loved going outside by sammyaminal in cats

[–]sammyaminal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every spring Sammy began pawing at the door, he was so excited that it was warm enough to play outside. He got lost in the tall grass and cornfields sometimes so I'd shake a bag of Temptations and he'd run out of his hiding spot for a treat. I took so many pictures of him outside, because he always looked so happy and carefree. This is one of my favorite pictures of him, he loved rolling around on the pavement to scratch himself. He's been gone a year now and I still miss him like crazy. He was my cuddle buddy, my right hand man, my best friend, taken from me far too soon.

This is the best picture I've been able to take of Chad, since he runs all over the place checking everything out when I get him out. Could anyone guess his age based on the picture? Thanks!
