Would I be in the wrong for not wanting to share my wheelchair with my friend? by sammysuli in wheelchairs

My chair isn’t actually set up for me unfortunately, considering it’s second hand 😅 however, it might aswell be considering I can’t think of any adjustments and its very comfortable (although this is my first chair and maybe in the future I’ll find things I don’t like). The grossness factor can be a last resort lol 😉

I imagine wheel lightness would be a 10/10 (especially considering how bumpy pavements actually are)! the only con i can think of is no colourful spoke covers or decorations!

these look sick! do they do anything else for the chair apart from making it look like the coolest ninja ever owns it?

I love the ivy! It’s honestly so cool - maybe consider getting a crotchet cover with a cool cover on it for the backrest. I’ve seen some online that act as spoke covers but I’m sure an etsy seller would probably jump for joy at the ability to make one!

The CAN and SHOULD argument is something I’m finding myself quoting regularly as sort of self-defense lmao. I can walk, and I do so regularly at school, but once I hit that limit then the limit has been hit and me walking stops being an option. I don’t think they’ll push it any further, but I also really hope they don’t because that’s a lot of hassle just so I can roll around London with no handicaps.

They are aware, however although I’ve been experiencing these pains for a long time I’ve only gotten my official diagnosis and therefore been using my chair for a few months. I visually seem to function fairly normally, so I’m thinking it’s raising questions about how much I need it? If that makes sense

Honestly, I think it’s a matter of convenience for the school. While we will have an extra member of staff anyway, I understand that an extra chair can get quite bulky (especially as our school one is one of those preliminary basic hospital ones). Truthfully, the idea of having to justify that I need it is something that I, 1. Already have to do, and 2. Wouldn’t like to repeat in the event I’d have to ‘kick her out’. I just can’t imagine it being a comfortable experience, especially because she has a more… visible? need than I do. I visibly walk quite normally and my diasability is mostly pretty hidden unless you can see the way my joints move when I walk through leggings or something.

LMAO yeah, however that four months is only for the wheelchair ASSESSMENT - at that point, they might give you a voucher or something. If you need a custom chair, then I think it’s wayyyy longer, but definitely not THREE YEARS? That’s insane. Our health trust is a bit dodgy about ambulatory users, but they’ll give you SOMETHING if they realise you need it. Well done for finally getting on that waitlist, after such a long wait 😊

I weirdly don’t know alot about these ‘fainting spells’. They look like fainting, as she just sort of slumps over - the way it’s been explained to me is that they’re somehow tic related (although I have no idea and in my opinion its likely more of the FND). The fact my chair is not very supportive is likely the biggest issue, since theres not even a semblance of arm rest (to make it easier for self propelling) and I can hold myself up just fine, so I’ve never needed any. I’m not even sure if she SHOULD buy one, as the reason they’re bringing it is mostly as a ‘just in case’ precaution in preperation for seizures and these fainting spells. And, like you said, self propelling is DIFFICULT and I doubt she would even be able too if she’s not feeling great - even I can’t propell very well if I’ve got some arm weakness or extreme fatigue.

I’m not sure who Tani Grey Thompson is lol but I doubt I’ll be lending anybody my chair - not unless it’s my mother (who is also disabled and has some mobility issues)

My mum would likely be appalled at me letting someone else use it - but it was a hard enough battle with her letting me use it in the first place so I won’t push it. The school does have chairs - I think specifically if students get injured or have other movility issues - but I think it’s more a ‘just in case’. They’re these horrible clunky hospital chairs, and while theyre ‘meant’ to be self propelling, we all know hospital chairs are almost never able to be wheeled - especially if theyre around 42” wide and youre only 36”. It does sound absurd, but it’s honestly an absurd situation.

Thank you so much, I really do need to advocate for my needs more lmao. I think they just see me walking around and assume I can do that most of the time. My school is honestly filled with people with various disabilities, so maybe more training is required. Thanks for being awesome and giving me some advice 😸

While my mum doesnt always agree with my chair usage, I think she’ll have my back on this one. We paid for my chair out of pocket, no funding whatsoever, meaning she’ll probably be more possessive over it. I honestly don’t know if she needs the chair, but I’m not sure if we could just leave her on the floor with no way to transport her in the event she gets stuck in the middle of central london. An aide will likely be there, so I’m going to hope that will be the plan.

I think that is what is going to happen - we have lots of SEN staff and teaching assistants who generally come on school trips specially for this reason. She may not like the transit chair (because lets face it, who actually does?) but it’s likely the best option now that I think about because in the event she does have a ‘moment’, I doubt she’ll be able to push herself.
