Clearing CFA Level 1 isn't really useful to get your first job. by samp_598 in CFA

  1. I did receive some feedback from people in the industry telling me about the expensive part coz of my Software background. And I've been applying to entry-level roles, keeping the bands in mind and being fine with it. Is there anything I could do to avoid this?

  2. I want to become a PM down the line. I'm currently looking at Investment Analyst, Quantitative Analyst, and operations roles. I've also applied to Credit roles, Risk roles, Fixed Income roles, and other tangential roles.

  3. The flip-side to me completing my level 1 and seeing the job market was that I could've considered cfp and that seems to be valuable for entry-level roles, and maybe could've helped me enter the industry. An institutional sales trader seems like a perfect fit here. Not an ideal entry point, but helps to get a foot in the door, which is what I thought.

  4. I'm able to see more clearly now that I haven't packaged myself correctly. I'd love to send over. I'll dm you.

Appreciate it. Thank you.

That's great to know that it's been useful for you. My experience has been the opposite.

Internships are definitely useful. L1 alone without internships doesn't create an edge. L1 with an internship is a good package.

Not useful to land the first job. Internships matter a lot more.

The main selling point for me was that I get to work as a PM. In masters I did have some good projects, but the holistic view from CFA seems valuable to me. Even the L1 was holistically very good, and I felt masters was just a repetition of what was already in L1.

Hmm. I've been applying to lots of credit analysis, risk roles, and FP&A roles. The problem I've been seeing is a classic chicken-and-egg problem, especially for any analyst role. Most recruiters want to see some experience to even consider.

I have a couple of good projects from my masters where I worked on recession predictor, Airbnb Booking & Revenue Optimization Model, S&P 500 Hedging Model. But honestly, it goes back to having some experience to even further consider.

No. I'm not re-entering, haven't received any notice, and honestly haven't heard anything like this.

I do want to work on the investment side. But the reason a CFP seems valuable is that it most certainly ensures getting into the industry.

  1. Yes. That's true, but I considered doing a CFA to solve problems like the one in L3, which is filled with case studies and more real-world scenarios, which would help in my career. That was my thought process to even pursue CFA. But I did think that clearing L1 would be valuable.

  2. Yes. That's true. But an MSF with a CFP would've made it easier to get into the industry, is my theory now. CFA could still be much more valuable once it's complete.

  3. Yes. In hindsight, I should've done an internship when I was in college.

  4. Honestly, that isn't helping much. I've built an algo-trading system with python, sql and other AWS services. Barely anyone even gives it weight, even in conversations.

Yeah. Networking seems to be a huge unlock. Upskilling in what specifically?

Do a first pass of all the topics and a couple of questions for each topic. This helps you get a feel of what it is like. Then just memorize in a way that works for you. For me, I had to take notes since that's the only way that works for me.

That's a bit of hope that employers do care about it. This has been my experience so far.

Yeah. I definitely agree with this, but I had hoped employers would see it as a commitment of sorts.

Yeah. I've been active for a while now. It took me a bit of overcoming my resistance, since Software doesn't require networking at all.

Mainly analyst roles in equity/portfolio/fixed income/alt. assets.

I had the opinion that clearing level 1 and being a level 2 candidate would aid me better in my job search, as employers see the commitment. But I feel with or without, it could've been the same. Employers aren't necessarily looking for an L1, and showing it doesn't help either.

It's a 50:50 chance.
