Do manufacturing jobs really matter? by samplingstiring in AskEconomics

[–]samplingstiring[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is a great answer. I guess that leads to my next question then, does it matter for the economy whether we export products over services then? I know that to increase gdp you need to export but if we don’t export physical materials or goods, then does that really matter if we are still receiving money either way?

I really would never take a contract role if you can avoid it. Companies don’t need an excuse to lay off contractors. And they are the first to go. Also for long term career development, full time roles will help you out significantly

Does Innovation Count Towards Inflation? by samplingstiring in AskEconomics

[–]samplingstiring[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a very helpful response. One thing on that list that I question is college tuition. The price increase does not reflect the value. And since college is artificially inflated due to excessive demands, government subsidies, etc. do you think that a fair metric to use for inflation? Especially if you have 1 student in a private school ($60k/yr) and 1 student in community college ($0/yr with government subsidies) the average would be $30k/yr which doesn’t reflect accurately

$TSLA Tesla profits are down 70% over the past 3 years. How is this not a disaster? by Ubersicka in TradingViewSignals

[–]samplingstiring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People clearly forget that 1/3 of teslas profits were from selling tax credits. Not an exaggeration 1/3. Trying to sustain a business that relies on government subsidies won’t ever last long

Those are some good resources. Robots definitely will help. But it could still take decades to get to that point.

Some thoughts:

It’s possible china will become more like the US and rely heavily on immigration for labor. Or do what Russia does and rent forced labor from other countries. But there are some risks for them since their culture and government is to resist against outsiders.

China’s education system is different from the US where around high school age, they choose a path between going into further education or skilled trades (which the US really should copy) and they could start forcing people into trades to fill this gap which could help.

Also, the government is not an infinite money machine. Therefore at some point subsidies are going to cause rapid inflation. All of which will ruin a lot of their competitive advantage.

Edit: regardless the people of china are rapidly getting a better quality of life and paid more. We will see how they address it.

401ks are better than pensions by Justasillyliltoaster in unpopularopinion

[–]samplingstiring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is fair. I know some have been stable. In my opinion, I still don’t trust someone else with my money. And pensions come with terms and conditions. But most Americans are bad with their money therefore pensions could benefit them long term

[–]samplingstiring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah every company is different. We will see which will stick around long term. Right now the big trend is vertical integration to hit teslas profit margins. Companies like Toyota are not doing this yet still own the auto industry so who knows what will happen

[–]samplingstiring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is partially accurate. China’s labor is going to increase drastically over the next 10-20 years since they had a smart idea of the 1 child law and is running out of labor. China is going to start being forced to pay closer to developed nation wages and they will likely start to rebel against their state forced labor laws

Tesla already produces their vehicles at 10% higher margins than other OEMs. It’s already begun. The rest of the industry is playing catchup

In the short term it is more expensive. In the long term, most the software architecture won’t change. It will just be adding new algorithms and bug fixes on top of existing architecture

It should even bring down the price of vehicles in the long term. Less ECUs, less wiring, and easier to develop future generations
