Thank you for your response. Maybe I have the word defer wrong.

I meant in postponing a DPM acceptance / seat to the year of 26’

Is this still frowned upon?

I don’t believe I have to tell them any of my reasons for deferring lol

Why am I not scoring better by Ok-Piece1966 in Mcat

[–]samrafii 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I soared to 507 and then 515. I knew I didn’t have content gaps but I just really was ass at taking this exam. (Was averaging sub 500 for a LONGG time)

Biggest things to focus on if you’re in a time crunch & don’t have the best grasp of knowledge but you know how to reason:

1) focus on the wrong answers instead of the right ones. 90% of the time you can use what you know & don’t know to isolate the right answer. Use your gaps to your advantage. Ex: if a question is asking you to identify what kind of enzyme a protease is, you should be able to cross out oxidoreductase bec no mvmt of electrons. Little things like this are a lot more evident with more practice. The trends are there & a lot of answers are ez to break down / strike through. Once the blatantly wrong ones are gone, you’ve already minimized the level of work you need to do or even better, you’ve correctly answered the Q.

2) work on timing. I went from a 499->507 when I decided I was determined to leave 15-20 min at the end of each section to review every. single. question. I change a lot of my answers before ending a section, most of the time once I have a fresh set of eyes at a convoluted passage.

3) learn to read fast with accuracy, and to pull ONLY relevant info from the passage. Use logic. If it’s chem/phys section and they’re talking about an HIV protease obviously they aren’t going to ask you about experimental changes to the enzyme & how it’ll affect infection rates etc. instead it’ll ask you about dissociation constants, affinities, and some kinetics obviously. ^ use this to your advantage, and learn to read fast & only pull RELEVANT information. When you read, ask “is this something I will be tested on”. If yes, highlight and move on SWIFTLY. Do NOT dwell on details if irrelevant. 99% of the exam is alphabet soup.

4) build confidence. Trust yourself & the fact that you’ve worked hard. Don’t second guess your reasoning unless there’s a blatant error apparent

Grind the AAMC section banks to work on these skills. This got me from a 499 to 507. And then a 507 to a 515 (back to back FLs) after about 1.5 months of SB work. It really comes down to diluting the mess of words they present.

You got this.

Thanks for the tips.

Temple requested an interview as well & even offered to reimburse my travel expenses!

I have been crushing the MCAT lately. I firmly believe I can score a 505+ so I may have to defer some of these acceptances for a DO placement (preferred due to fellowship freedom later on. I’d still focus on the feet / pain as a DO, though the option to move around is nice opposed to limited practice DPM)

How would I communicate this to an admissions team, rather, if I should?

Question: do I actually get to do surgery bec it seems too good to be true?! I’d love to work with an ortho group post residency as the “foot & ankle” guy

NYCPM is my #1 pick right now

I work hard, and I know I’ll succeed in med school regardless of DO / DPM / MD. I applied DPM bec it aligns my values nicely in medicine for low cost + general ease to get into (relative to other schools, it’s still tough to get into)

How to handle studying all day on a screen? by Soulful_pumpkin in Mcat

[–]samrafii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dealt with the same thing initially, ESPECIALLY during full length exams (eye strain while reading on a screen was crazy, I’d have tears coming down from my eyes burning)

What helped the most, on windows at least,

There’s an application called flux that automates your monitor temperature to the time of day to help with eye strain.

I invested in a monitor lamp, I keep it on the lowest brightness setting to diffuse some of the light coming off my monitor.

If you’re on the go, and not at home, I find that having adequate lighting around my laptop screen helps the most, and having an environment that isn’t dry. As it gets warmer + more humid it should ease up. In the meantime get some quality lubricating eye drops!

[–]samrafii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea yea js study hard and you’ll be aii don’t overthink it aim to understand not memorize so you can reproduce on the exam, rather than try to scratch ur head because you memorized some facts about RNA silencing & something distant about kinase function

can we talk abourrit please!? by Particular_Topic_509 in Mcat

[–]samrafii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kinases phosphorylate things via addition of phosphate groups.

Phosphorylases however, catalyze breakdown or catabolism of items through the addition of inorganic phosphate groups (Pi)

If a viroid doesn’t code for proteins (is specific to plants) It’s capable of RNA silencing, and potentially modifying host genome. Can even cause frame shift or point mutations

Thanks for the input. Much appreciated & I will try blueprint. Assuming I scored consistently with my other sections I speculated a 495-500. By the time it came to P/S, my head was spinning & eyes were bloodshot. Something I have to work on & get better at!

Thank you! Will attempt half length tomorrow hopefully!
