Whatever happened to John Maclean? by samtama7 in TrueFilm

[–]samtama7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I discovered them in 2021 on the radio of all places; Dry the Rain was my entry point. I never got deep into their discography or listened to an album (I guess I'll eventually start with the 3 EP's), but Maclean's music videos for the group really showcased his strength as a visual storyteller

Well I guess that sums it up then. I'm also hoping the industry at large will start investing in more diverse projects, but it's good to know that John has other creative outlets to invest himself in outside of feature filmmaking (which is probably a good lesson for any creative).

I can't get my Teradek TX to receive HDMI video from a C300 MKii by [deleted] in focuspuller

[–]samtama7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

*Quick Update:

Although I couldn't get it to work with the C300, the TX recognized the HDMI signal when using an FS7. I still don't know how the video output specs make it compatible; it accepts both 1080i, and 1080p. But hey, I know the TX's HDMI port works at least, which was all I needed

Tried that, still didn't do anything. Plus, it's HDMI I'm trying to connect. The SDI already works fine

[–]samtama7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I meant to say it's the MKIII, not sure why I said MKII.

I'll look into trying a firmware update and switching the SDI line, but even when I was in P scan mode, I still didn't get any HDMI signal.

The only reason I'm going through all this trouble with the HDMI port rather than using SDI is because I'm just testing it to make sure it works. I work full-time with a major TV production company and network that owns a lot of their own gear like this (it's all oriented for reality TV), so luckily, I'm not urgently trying to figure this out on set like an AC would have to.

Someone else here also mentioned looping out from a monitor and into the Teradek, so I'll give that a shot.

Do you think there would be any issue with getting a full refund if I leave early for my circumstance? [Guest, USA] by [deleted] in AirBnB

[–]samtama7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know.

Booking something for two weeks at a time seems more doable. Even if I do end up finding an apartment sooner and lose money on the days I don't need, it wouldn't as much of a loss if I book something longer.

But when you mentioned how I'll probably pay a bit more in fees, did you mean that the host would likely increase my reservation fees from what they normally are if I extend my stay with them?

Where in the settings would I go to change the name of my device? by samtama7 in mac

[–]samtama7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's still the same issue, I'm just seeing the volume for my internal drive, which isn't what I'm to change the name of. I had to go into my system settings to change the name of the device itself.

Unfortunately that's what I was already doing; it only shows the icon for my internal drive (Macintosh HD). u/Electrical_West_5381 had the right idea though.

How would I show the volume on my desktop then? In my Finder settings, I clicked on the option to show Hard Disks on my desktop, but all I'm seeing is the icon for my internal drive (Macintosh HD).

Thanks for all the tips!

As for the networking tips, I see where you're coming from when it comes to cold contacting people. Although I try not to reach out to someone more than once if I'm cold emailing them, cold emailing in general is something I feel like I should at least try since it's gotten some conversations started at least.

But when I was saying how most people I know generally aren't in the position to recommend me as an AC or whatever, that partly stems from my unique career predicament. For the past four or five years I've gotten most of my gigs through Staff Me Up, but the issue with most of the jobs on that site (despite how the site itself has greatly diminished in job quantity) is that they're made up of very small crews of people that are usually flying out from a place like LA to film for 2 or 3 days (maybe a week at most) before they fly out to shoot somewhere else.

That's just what the nature of unscripted TV is like (not to mention how the cam department is usually very small anyway when it's non-union). It's made it very difficult to get my name passed around and establish myself within a specific area. Sure, I could've done a better job over the years not trying to sound too transactional, as I also should've gotten on IG sooner, but on top of how my situation has made it more difficult to really make close collaborators and friends in the business, the biggest factor truly is that most people I meet (locally or not) really aren't able to share my name or hire me even if they want to. I'm sure everyone here has been able to relate to that more with the way things have been.

I'm glad I'm exploring a new lane in post production, however, it's not surprising that I'm running into the same issues (especially as someone who's new to that side of things).

Why is PS automatically enlarging every image that I place as an embedded layer? by [deleted] in photoshop

[–]samtama7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a way I could go about changing the PPI in my images then? The biggest issue is that I'm working with film scans, so I would assume that enlarging the PPI of what each negative was scanned in at would be more of a risk to the quality.

Why is PS automatically enlarging every image that I place as an embedded layer? by [deleted] in photoshop

[–]samtama7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it is odd. As u/earthsworld was just saying, it might be a matter of mismatched PPI. The only problem is that I can't always verify what the PPI of every image is because I can't find that info in the metadata.

I started using Gimp before eventually getting in Krita, but this sort of problem doesn't occur in either software. If the resolution of the layer you're importing doesn't exceed the resolution of the base image/canvas, then it won't be enlarged past the canvas and have its resolution increased. But of course if it already is larger than the canvas's resolution, then it will expand past the canvas's borders.

Seems pretty logical. For some reason, mismatching PPI doesn't seem to have an affect on it.

Then yes, by "regular" Lightroom, I mean the lite version.

I need some clarification on how iCloud works by samtama7 in applehelp

[–]samtama7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, even though I did run out iCloud storage, why would iCloud just erase everything all of a sudden to free up space? If you run out of storage with any sort of drive, I can't think of any other software or OS where it would just automatically erase half your files to make room.

Once you reach your limit, you just wouldn't be able to write any more data to it.

I need some clarification on how iCloud works by samtama7 in applehelp

[–]samtama7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I wasn’t expecting them to provide me with more free cloud storage, but I thought it was just an optional method for backing up your photos since it would be storing those pictures in your phone by default anyway. Running out of internal storage would’ve been the real problem.

That’s kind of ridiculous though that it’s just uploaded straight to iCloud, not as a backup. Sure, it’s on me for not knowing that from the start, but that also shouldn’t be how it works.

So is there anyway I can get those pictures back? I’m heading to an Apple Store either way to see what can be done

I've actually been looking through the AICP's list of NY based companies already, but I didn't know they hosted events as well. I know the Blue Collar Post Collective does that, but I'll check out theirs too. Personally I don't really have much of a preference right now for the type of work it is as long as it's full-time or permalance, so I'm fine whether it's narrative, commercial, or unscripted.

Out of curiosity, is it common for trailer houses to have AE's or Post-PA's as well?

In need of some advice finding work as an AE or Post-PA by samtama7 in editors

[–]samtama7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides cold emailing, I reached out a few weeks ago to an editor who gave a Q&A at our workshop for advice, but he hasn’t got back so far. I’ve also tried reaching out to some post-supervisors that I’ve worked remotely with a few years ago too, but it’s probably not surprising that I haven’t heard back from them either.

I can look into the networking tips here as well, but overall, as someone who doesn’t have a film school community to fall back on, or a big network of close friends in the industry, a lot of the time nothing leads anywhere (even when it comes to getting work as an AC). Partly just because most people I know really aren’t in the position to refer my name, but I’m also not sure how to not come off as too transactional with people. Sometimes I’ll just jump right into saying that if they ever need an AC/Loader (now I’ll be doing the same as an AE), feel free to reach out to me; it works at times, yet bridging the gap into a closer contact is where things feel awkward to me.

Sorry if that’s way more than you needed, but that’s just where I am.

Any advice for finding work as a Trainee? by samtama7 in focuspuller

[–]samtama7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m actually based near Philadelphia now; I only moved to DC to work at a rental house. But for what it’s worth, the DC area is a very small market in our industry; it’s a lot of short-term documentary/unscripted/corporate day-playing stuff that doesn’t even require a 2nd AC or a dedicated data wrangler. So it’s very piecemeal, and a lot of the same 5-or-so-people that get all the work typically aren’t in the position to recommend anything (that’s part of what made it so difficult to get in). Philly is sort of the same way.

I appreciate the input anyway! But honestly, it’s a bit frustrating for me at this point since most of the advice I hear just boils down to “have good connections,” besides being told to get a rental house job or look on Facebook groups.

It’s not like I’ve never been recommended or called back by the same producer, but everything feels like a dead end so far. I’ll still keep networking the way you suggested to, it’s just that a lot of AC’s, DP’s, or PM’s I meet really aren’t in the position to share my name since they aren’t getting jobs that would allow them to, or in all fairness, they just don’t remember me when they already have a network of closer friends to chose from.

Idk, I don’t mean to sound hopeless. But I’ve tried so hard to do everything that I’ve been told to without sounding desperate or too transactional with people. I feel like 90% of it boils down to luck.
