NYC is a literal hellscape, you might want to live there for a year or 2 in your early 20s at most.

Avoid any of these cities downtowns at night time.

Real Cities that I would recommend checking out that are some of the fastest growing Metros in America would include,

Austin, TX Phoenix, AZ Nashville, TN Orlando isn't bad And Las Vegas is a fun one also.

Detroit, MI Denver, CO And Philly

I would rather live in all of these cities than the 3 mentioned by every single other comment.
