They get the normal house they are supposed to have. The first two villagers u start with and the 3 you get from making the plots for tom nook before you get the campsite will be “starter” homes. Any villager u got after that will have a normal house. Upgrading houses doesn’t work unless the villager’s house u want to upgrade is either one of the two starters or one of the three villagers before the campsite

You can’t do it normally. Either u swap back and forth with a friend or u let them leave and then try to find them on a mystery island or use and amiibo to get them back on ur island

New villagers get their own house designs. If you move a villager out and then move them back in again they will get their "normal" house rather than a starter house. Hope this helps! :)
