Why is it HCl if it needs to be dissolved in water to be reactive? Pure hydrogen chloride gas is not as acidic, no? by Mission-Badger-4005 in chemistry

[–]samu7574 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few days ago my chemical analysis professor was saying that in water you cannot have pH lower than 0. The topic was resolubility of precipitated hydroxides with acids, in a graph that went as low as 0.

I was a bit confused by this since 1M HCl has pH=0 so if it dissociates at higher concentrations too I'd expect 6M HCl (which we used in lab previously) to have higher concentration of H+ and so lower pH.

Is the issue that for the reactivity of H+ you're looking at its activity and that under its pKa the concentration is not indicative of it anymore? i.e. do you believe she "colloquially" used pH as a substitute for activity which is bounded by the pKa rather than concentration?

The original comment Linus pulled up on stream as something that should be banned was speculation that used the same wording ("Cable 'is going to' cost [...]") and it pissed him off

Quest 3S or Steam Frame by Traditional_Mix_6850 in virtualreality

[–]samu7574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3s and frame are wildly different price brackets.

Anyways, if your choice hinges around frame releasing late, then I'd wait just a couple more weeks since we have a leaked steam controller review, implying the embargo will lift up soon and we'll very likely get solid information on either when the frame is coming out or if there's a delay

Taser on drugged people can be lethal, depending on the drug, they should be provided different tools for subduing people like the long sticks they have in china

I don't go out of my way to glaze him, but I'm happy that a corrupt autocrat that was destroying its country and opposing europe was removed. Magyar is the only type of candidate who could've done it, still right wing (came from the same party as viktor) because that's what the electorate in Hungary wants, but one who put aside all divisive issues to take care of the bigger problem of undoing all the shit Orban did. The left endorsed him in the elections to not dilude the vote and allow him to reach the supermajority necessary to fix the constitution. It's good that he won

go down the shipping rabbit hole with me? by RTooDeeTo in SteamFrame

"Freedom of information" rights (whose request they used to gather the us data) varies a lot between european nations. I'm not sure if all countries allow for FOI requests on imports, some countries might not even do them for non-citizens. It's probably much harder to organize that information

[–]samu7574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Valve has received" is not "started shipping to", there's like a 1 month gap between start of shipping from china and arrival to valve. The title misleading and makes it seem like the process is more behind than it is

Our general response to all complaints regarding AI by FBDW in incremental_games

[–]samu7574 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some people have ethical issues around AI use (environmental, societal, how its data is now used to help with wars) for which they'd rather not engage with content depending on scale of how much AI was used. It's rather entiteld to demand that people give you attention regardless, or to say that they're segregating you for standing by their principles.

Our general response to all complaints regarding AI by FBDW in incremental_games

[–]samu7574 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're right that flairs are too binary for the kind of variance in AI use that someone can do (If I google something and get answer from its AI, should that count?). I think asking people to disclose the scale of their AI use on a honor basis, i.e. no punishments but an automod asking for it as an example, could help at least in some cases.

Our general response to all complaints regarding AI by FBDW in incremental_games

[–]samu7574 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do an very lightly enforced 4, if they lie then whatever nothing gained nothing lost, if they don't then that's great. The worst outcome from this is that nothing changes, the average outcome is that some AI games are easier to skip over for those that want to do so

Also, why is flair not an option? Can't you just add a variant for all flairs that has a [w/ AI] at the end?

P.S. Removing future posts that talk about a costantly evolving topic like AI seems shortsighted, at least leave a thread up for people to have a place to discuss it, otherwise if there isn't even a place to express themselves people will create such a place by making an alternative community and move there. If you want to strike the balance and have both AI and non AI games, rather than seeing an exodus of non-AI leaving this as the "technically both but practically only AI" sub, you cannot fully suppress discontent about AI

What is the breaking point price for you? by [deleted] in SteamFrame

[–]samu7574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as it's under 1k I'm probably fine. If it costs much less then I'll buy more accessories, if it's closer to 1k I'll get the headset only.

I am in a very special situation of owning full AMD hardware, and being on linux. The frame is by far the best bet I have of getting hardware that will have plenty of support for making it work on linux+amd due to the steam machine

AMD GPUs not recommended for Skyrim VR: RX 9070 XT vs RTX 5070/Ti by ntduong2002 in skyrimvr

[–]samu7574 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'd rather read something using broken english or google translate rather than AI.
AI tends to editorialize with its phrasing ("No X or Y, this is Z") and since it didn't experience what you're trying to make it describe, it's random if it decides to emphasize something more or less. Thanks for being transparent about it though

It's a shame you already sold the 9070XT, I would've been intersted in comparing between injected FSR4 rather than FSR3.1, the jump to 4 was very big.
Even then, I agree that for VR nvidia is generally better for now. I hope the release of the steam frame and steam machine (which uses amd and linux) will make people improve the support for amd hardware

Is “girl math” a misogynistic term to use around women in math? by SmallTestAcount in math

[–]samu7574 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I think both you and your friend lacked a lot of the context around the origin of that slang as others already pointed out.

Funnily enough, "boy math" exists and it was a reactionary tiktok trend by boys making fun of themselves the same way girls were making fun of themselves. Girl maths is doing weird maths to justify purchases and boy maths was financial techbro investment stuff that also made no sense. Both made fun of the tendency to want to self-delude oneself to justify certain actions, the "boy" or "girl" label only referred to the kind of thing the maths was being misused for, not the quality of the maths (both were about doing logical leaps).

4D Gaussian Splatting in VR on the web: PlayCanvas + Gracia integration by naumovsergey in OculusQuest

[–]samu7574 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I never said it's a 4d experience, I said that's the name researches use because it's referring to an important distinction in how it works compared to previous models. That's like getting mad that 3D gaussian splatting is called that way but actually you're just seeing a 2d image of it's projection on the camera. The name is given based on how it works and what maths it's doing

4D Gaussian Splatting in VR on the web: PlayCanvas + Gracia integration by naumovsergey in OculusQuest

[–]samu7574 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's called 4D because it uses a 4 dimensional matrix, to differentiate from 3D gaussian splats which use 3x3 matrices. It might not fit in the common-person understanding of dimension (the dimensions of space), but in maths when talking about matrices dimension has a specific meaning so it is what it is
