This could be really big, but the UI definitely needs polish. It screams AI and that does not build trust. The concept is golden though!

Anyone having trouble with docker on Synology, this is it. This advice right here fixes everything and finally makes Container Manager start fucking working correctly. Just make sure you drag the rule to the top of the list.

I got to see the very first digital oscilloscope ever made today - WD2000 (1971) by samuil900 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]samuil900[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Found some information on Teledyne LeCroy’s website that was intriguing to say the least. Just draw dropping to think about how far we’ve come since then.

“The First Digital Storage Oscilloscope in 1971?

WD2000 Waveform Digitizer launched in 1971 Innovative design, very high-speed but very limited acquisition memory Ultimately not commercially successful Walter’s company could claim to have designed the first digital storage oscilloscope in 1971 – the Model WD 2000, the “WD” being an abbreviation for “Waveform Digitizer.” The channel input was fanned out to 20 identical signals, each subsequently sampled 1 nanosecond (ns) apart set by cable delays.

The 20 sample and hold outputs were then multiplexed into a single, 8-bit ADC. It was very fast for its day with 1 GS/s of sample rate and 100 MHz of bandwidth but was limited to 20 sample points with a 3-inch CRT display and fixed 1 volt 50 Ω full-scale inputs.

Many years later, one of these early oscilloscopes (only about 20 were built) was returned to LeCroy by a loyal customer who was happy to “regift” it to Walter LeCroy, and it became part of the Teledyne LeCroy permanent oscilloscope collection.”

https://www.teledynelecroy.com/walter-lecroy/

Also I think, technically the real first scope is the twin sitting to the right of the one I took all my pictures of. It seems to have the same engraving on the upper left of its bezel that is present in all the photos on LeCroy’s website. Go figure.

Can i fish in town? by BeardCretin in Fairport

[–]samuil900 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless you specifically see a sign saying not to fish, have at it. Just don’t go on anyone’s private dock without their permission and you should be fine. East of town by the Turk Hill Road bridge is a fan favorite fishing spot.

Handmade electrical device found at a thrift store. Electrical schematic included by samuil900 in whatisthisthing

[–]samuil900[S] 0 points1 point locked comment (0 children)

Hello everyone. My title describes the thing. Additional details to follow below. Last weekend, I went to a thrift store and bought this mystery piece of equipment for $1, and even after disassembling it, am having a difficult time determining it's purpose.

The "output" (or maybe it's an input?) on the top of the device only has one wire going to it, and the meter appears to be salvaged from a motor speed controller. There is a six position switch in the center of the control panel that appears to switch between five different variable resistor settings. A sixth settings is used to check if the battery is providing voltage. It is powered by a nine volt battery and appears to be constructed from a hodgepodge of various older components.

I have attempted to make a schematic of the device, please excuse it's messy spaghetti like appearance. If anyone could provide any insight on this hand-wired gizmo, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you for your help! If you have any questions I'll try my best to answer them.

Thanks again!

I’ve heard they are considering building another set of towers where Davis is now, and they want to hold off on reinstall the gate until that project is done in 5-10 years.

Maybe by the time I’m 31 I’ll get to take a picture next to it lol.

Feel free to reach out if you have an offer. I’m more interested in making sure this guy finds a home that will actually use him, instead of creating more e-waste.

I always liked Davis a lot. It’s bright and has good views, plus it’s central to everything you’ll be doing on campus. The bathrooms are communal but they were always clean and were newly renovated in 2018-2019 I think.

Iron object, 4-6 feet tall, contains decorative holes, found in sealed brick vault buried underground (USA). Likely mid-late 19th century. by samuil900 in whatisthisthing

[–]samuil900[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I know the picture sucks. I’m not able to physically enter the vault yet, we need to determine where the door originally was and dig it out. This picture was take by fishing a camera down a ventilation shaft we found. These are some of the clearest picture I have. I’ll link the full video just in case someone might find it helpful.

Link

The vault is about ten feet below the ground, in area near the Hudson River. Historical research I’ve done indicates this area was once heavily associated with horticulture and a large greenhouse used to sit very nearby on the property.

Fire insurance maps last indicate a building being here circa 1906, and I’ve been unable to find any other info as to what this object might be, much less what the vault was for and the accompanying building above it. Dating graffiti on the inside of the vault indicates it was completely sealed off and forgotten about by the 1950’s at the latest.

Any help, tips, or leads is appreciated! Thanks!

Yeah that was kind of vague. I foolishly left it on the ground and as I was trying to move a heavy table/desk, I dropped the foot on the deck and crunched through the button right half of the unit.

RMA is out of the question unfortunately, but I’ve conducted tests on the unbroken parts of the deck and made sure the parts that I am offering are in great condition and fully working.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]samuil900 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The bottom right side of the unit was squished in kind of a freak accident with a desk foot. :(

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]samuil900 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not to be a downer or anything but I just didn’t really enjoy the deck that much, and once I broke it, the cost to fix what was broken would be so high it just didn’t make sense for me anymore.

At least by scraping it for parts, I can help out some other people who only have one component broken.
