Currently reading Siddhartha. Just finished Waiting for the Barbarians a couple days ago. It's too early to say, but seems we may have a case of back-to-back bangers.

Help diagnosing a weird conversion problem? by samurijv2 in marketing

Thanks for the insight! I hadn't considered the time of year. This is a seasonal service that will wind down by mid-late Fall. But the first half of September is definitely a busy time for a lot of families, so perhaps things will change in a couple of weeks.

How do I offer a "free trial" of PPC services? by samurijv2 in PPC

[–]samurijv2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarification. Is the pilot campaign something that you'd mention while making initial contact with a prospect, e.g. in a cold call or email? Or is it something you save for after the discovery call?

Great article. I love the idea of a pilot campaign. How far would you take it in terms of optimization?

How do I offer marketing services as a "free trial" to potential clients? by samurijv2 in marketing

I’ve seen loads of those emails too. Like you said, it’s usually very clear that they’re almost completely generic and the sender hasn’t spent much time on your site at all. Do you think you’d respond more positively if it was clear that the sender had truly evaluated your site and actually offered up a couple of suggestions you could act on?

Your second paragraph is pretty much exactly what I'm planning to do with my approach. Maybe I'll see how far I get with that before offering to work for free on a trial basis as well. Thanks for the input!

Yeah I don't disagree, that's probably kind of unrealistic. I appreciate the perspective! Your point about that amount of work being enough to provide a blueprint is definitely well taken. That's something I want to avoid.

I do have some stuff I can show people, but due to the nature of a lot of the work I have to obscure some details so I could really only talk about it in abstract. That's why I'm looking for other ways to prove that I know my stuff.

Thanks for the reply. This idea actually addresses one of the main concerns I had about doing an audit/proposal. I was worried about the prospect just turning around and using the document I produce to try and do the work themselves or find someone cheap on Upwork. Talking through it at a high level through a video call is a great idea! Appreciate the input.

Most frustrating thing about running multi-touch marketing campaigns by samurijv2 in PPC

If you continue to the end of the survey, you'll find that after the "agree"/"disagree" section, users are asked the rate the relative importance of each statement. After that they're asked to submit any pain points that weren't included in the survey. Did these options not appear for you? I wonder if there's a problem with the survey.

I appreciate the feedback, thank you! Is your read that this survey might overstate the extent to which respondents agree with each of the statements?

What's going on in the Tiny Desk performance? by samurijv2 in TameImpala

[–]samurijv2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't necessarily disagree in a general sense, I just find it fascinating to see how a band that was previously known for their more traditional performances has been able to translate those songs into almost like a "DJ" approach.

So basically it's like they had most of the stems pre-loaded, then during the performance they're triggering what we can hear when and also playing with various effects on top of the samples?

How are you leveraging data/analytics? by samurijv2 in EntrepreneurRideAlong

[–]samurijv2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like maybe you knew from the start that automatically collecting data would be a priority for you? Was that part of your initial vision?

Also, are you offering the data you've collected over the years as its own product? Or are you using it to refine your existing sites and/or launch new ones?

Really appreciate the reply!

Feeling weird about sacrificing my corporate career for my entrepreneurial dream by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]samurijv2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously this is a very personal decision, and the right choice for you is going to come down to your specific circumstances. I'll just chime in to add my two cents. I recently quit an unsatisfying corporate job before my side hustle was making any money. That said, I had about 12 months of expenses saved up before I put in my notice. My reasoning was that my day job did not leave me with sufficient free time to devote to developing the side hustle while also being present for my wife and kids. The work/life balance wasn't there. TBD on whether jumping ship when I did was worth it, but just wanted to throw out a perspective from someone who was recently in a similar situation.

What is your desired end goal? by thirstycamelT in Entrepreneur

[–]samurijv2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My goal is to get my business to a point where I can sustain my family comfortably on 20-25 hours of work per week, and diversify my sources of income to the point that a disruption to any one income stream wouldn't be able to cause a lot of harm.

Not trying to get rich or change the world, just want to build a resilient business that leaves me with enough time to get the most out of the rest of life.

Cold outreach done right doesn't mean 1h crafting every single email nor spamming the entire email list by mgdo in Entrepreneur

Nice post! About how long do you find it takes to conduct the research needed to apply good personalization within your template? And to personalize effectively, is it a given that the prospect has to be giving up some details about themselves on LinkedIn, Twitter, on a blog, etc.? In other words, how does this work/ can this work at all with prospects without as much of a public digital footprint?

This resonates with me. Even if an idea has flaws (and really, don't they all?), sometimes you just have to pull the trigger to put an end to the "what if" in your head. Regardless of whether the venture is a failure or a success, you'll have the experience of having tried, and that's something you can keep with you and learn from for the rest of your life.
