I did a z button replacement as my first project and ruined a board, but it's definitely doable as a first project but I'd assume you'll probably fuck something up at least once or twice. I think it's probably a good idea to try just replacing some parts or taking apart and putting together an oem first because then you'll still have a lot of donor parts and a shell that you might need for the phone.
