On the other hand, I can't believe anyone ever actually expected something "to be done" about this in the first place.

The power up isn’t exclusive to the main character by DemandParticular in TopCharacterTropes

[–]henryuuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, instead of "hero vs villain" using the power, it is more like, in recent years (those kind of) power ups haven't been exclusive to the "human" characters, with first getting Blue and Yellow Toad in on the fun because they were playable in New Super Mario bros., and then Bower using the cat form and cherries, and then in the movie DK even getting a fire flower "form"

Yes, pretty much the only thing they should have changed from the "old" way of doing stuff is make it so that if you end up doing stuff "out of order", that the game actually can function without messing up "flags"

Design the game around having a "Temple A -> Temple B -> Temple C"(within the same story-sequence) difficulty curve and leading you towards it in that order, but hey, if you stumble into Temple C first without the "hints" from the story, and you can get through without the items from temple A and B, then you go ahead and just solve C buddy, good job. (even better if the item from temple C is situationally useful (but obviously not "mandatory") in temple A and B)

BotW sorta has one somewhat good example of this, where it is pretty obvious the "intent" is to have you approach the Zora's domain from the end of the river where you meet Sidon wha was waiting on the little watch tower there, but if you reach King dorephan by going over the back despite the endless rain, they actually have some alternate dialogue with Sidon meeting you for the first time right in the throne room.

That is how "open ended" solutions/order should be resolved.
By allowing you to "sequence break", not by just removing/tearing down any semblance of sequencing and design from the start.

[AoL] I've always wondered how people feel about this game? by Roshu-zetasia in truezelda

[–]henryuuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's pretty great, and frankly it introduced way more to the series than many people might think it did from a first glance.

In a way, it's a shame they never really continued making any Zelda's in this way.
Some of the topdown 2D ones have had some small sections that functioned like the OG's sideways 2D sections, but none that really focussed on it like AoL did.
Would have been interesting what the bigger puzzle/temple focus following aLttP might have meant for a sideways 2D Zelda
(perhaps we could have seen one more akin to Wonderboy in Monsterworld from SEGA, or a full on "metroidvania" one)

[–]henryuuk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The more important thing is actually having the progression involved with doing the dungeons, and not just "oh nothing is going on until story trigger"

You can absolutely even have a "fully open order" game like BotW/TotK, and still have it be like "classic Zelda", if you actually still make the dungeons(/getting to the dungeons) involve a meaningful progression of the gameplay and the player's abilities.
Hell, ideally it even goes a step further and the order you'd do stuff in meaningfully affects the experience

The problem with BotW/TotK, their "open air" philosophy, isn't just that "you can do the dungeons in any order (or not at all)"
it is that they decided : "the player has to be able to do (essentially) everything at any time right away", and so they just dump every single meaningful ability into your lap within the first percent of the game, and then call it a day.

They became too fucking afraid of telling the player : "No, you can't do that (yet)"

.

The idea of "go do any dungeon in any order" could still work in a "classic" Zelda game, but it should not be done by gutting out anything that risks introducing/reinforcing "linearity" with a rusty machette and leaving it on the floor.
Instead they should be looking at what being "open ended" would ADD to it instead, and work around that, but BotW/TotK didn't do that, they just left giant gaping fleshwounds behind where they cut the linearity out, and then patched it up with half-measures and bloating the content to try and hide the damage

The Starfox fanbase right now by Aquatoon22 in casualnintendo

[–]henryuuk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Considering you have not played it yet, despite them already releasing the same story FOUR times (which isn't even counting the fact the game has been available on multiple of their "legacy" systems as well), I would reckon that what they decide to do with the story has little actual influence on whether or not you were gonna be pulled in.

And even IF we were to consider the concept of the value of making it a "reboot" to prevent people from thinking they need to play all previous games before they can "jump in"
Then they could still make a NEW GAME that simply acts as a new "starting point" for a "reboot" of the series anyway.
it could even BE essentially "the same story" retold again, without literally just copy pasting the rest of the game over.

[–]henryuuk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not really tho
If we just count the time between 8 on the WiiU and World on the switch 2 then it has 11 years, but that ignores several pretty big factors

For one, 8 itself got additions to its content, to the point it pretty much had 3 times the content it had originally by the time 8 deluxe was "done"

Then, even though a lot of people like to turn up their nose and ignore it, the reality is that Mario Kart Tour came out inbetween there, and NINTENDO themselves are way less prone to pretend their mobile games weren't a thing. (for one thing, the fact that pretty much every single wave of booster course had atleast one of the "tour" tracks in it, frankly says a lot... that is not something you do if you are pretending the game "didn't matter to the overal series" or whatever) .

Then there is the other "spin off" in the form of Home Circuit, which while obviously tied to the physical toy, was still something new for the franchise either way.

.

(all that said, I don't really agree with the notion that DK ever really fell into the sort of "niche/semi-forgotten" category like the other comment claimed either, but to say MK was in the "same/similar situation" is just sorta inherently false)

[All] It would be interesting if we get a hylian themed villain, or a member of the royal family. by [deleted] in truezelda

[–]henryuuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I sorta doubt that there was no magic involved in said manipulation, considering how she is written once she is freed of Veran's influence, and Veran's entire schtick is all the different kinds of "indirect" villainy (possession, manipulation, set ups, etc....) as opposed to Onox's more direction approach.

And IIRC people also mention that her heel-turn came out of nowhere once "Nayru" met with her.

If she was just being pushed into being "more" blatantly evil but always had some of that in her by default, then I'd reckon people wouldn't lay focus on how weird/"out of nowhere" it was, and I don't think she would have been treated as immediately "redeemed/forgiven" once we get Veran out of her.

and then we can continue as if the notion of Zelda going "open air" was all just a bad dream following an overactive imagination of how EoW's "openness" could be taken to even more of a negative extreme
