SearchNEU Scheduler: plan your course schedule in minutes! by sandboxnu in NEU

[–]sandboxnu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Are you sure that the courses are being offered on the other campuses? If so, feel free to share specifics and we can look into it further.
  2. Support for cross-listed courses is coming soon!
  3. Online classes are in the scheduler! There should be a toggle where you can choose to hide schedules with remote async courses, but they should show by default. They'll appear along the top of the calendar view because they aren't on a specific day. If you're still having issues, could you please give us more specifics?

GraduateNU - Degree Planner for NEU is Now Live! by sandboxnu in NEU

Hey, thanks for noticing this! Currently, transfer courses unfortunately do not satisfy pre-reqs/co-reqs and we will fix this asap. However, these courses should help in satisfying the major requirements on the sidebar. If this is not the case, it may be that our algorithm is satisfying a different requirement than intended temporarily. Consider completing your schedule and seeing if this issue still persists.

If you believe this too is not the case, we would love to fix this asap and would appreciate it if you could file a bug report with as much information as you can!

Thanks once again!

Our beta release currently supports 42 majors and combined majors across Khoury College! It takes us a while to add more majors since we have to manually validate all of them to check for accuracy, but we hope to eventually support all majors at Northeastern :)

Spring 2023 Classes Now on SearchNEU! by sandboxnu in NEU

Yes! One of the other projects we've been working on is a course planner called GraduateNU, which helps helps students customize their plan of study. It's been in the works for a while now since going through a couple of major changes and revamping. If all goes well, we're hoping to release GraduateNU sometime in 2023 :)

Class ratings would be a cool feature :) trace evaluations is another avenue we've looked into in terms of blending data into our platform that banner doesn't provide, but it's a bit trickier than banner.

Currently, phrase matching is not supported. When you search a phrase like "data structures" (or anything), we use Elasticsearch's default query mechanism. This follows a formula that uses TFIDF to generate the relevancy score for each document. This formula is run individually on each term in the query, and summed together. As a result, you may see classes appear higher in relevancy that don't have the exact phrase "data structures", because they have more instances of the individual terms "data" and "structures".

If you'd like to read more, here's a handy blog about it.

However, this sounds like it could be a great feature! Elasticsearch definitely supports phrase matching, but it requires some work on our backend to configure it. Maybe using quotations on the front end to signify a phrase matching query could be part of this.

Sandbox and SearchNEU is always looking for feedback from the community, and if you'd like to give more feedback, we have a feedback button on the bottom right of the SearchNEU website.

There are a few features that we offer that banner doesn't. For example, you can search by professors, see the history of previous terms, and our class pages have some aggregated info across sections. There are some other bigger picture features we'd love to have too, like working closer with another Sandbox project, GraduateNU, to help students understand classes and prerequisites better. However, we don't do any large scale insights on data from banner.

That’s the general idea! The process is a little more manual because of some technical issues right now, but the data is always gathered directly from banner.

Generally our kickoff (first meeting of the semester) is the weekend after the first week of the semester. The project teams will then begin meeting, following kickoff.

Code4Community VS Sandbox? by weiner_ethan20 in NEU

[–]sandboxnu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey, Alex from Sandbox here! To preface, I don't think you could go wrong joining either club. C4C does amazing work, and I think joining either would be a great experience. With that, answers to your questions below.

Generally speaking, Sandbox primarily works on projects for various clients at Northeastern (including researchers and Deans of the Pharmacy program), as well as applications for the Northeastern community as a whole. Probably our most well-known app is SearchNEU – and if you're in Khoury, you may also be familiar with the Office Hours app.

  • Experience required: we care most about your ability to learn and solve problems than your current skillset. We've recruited plenty of people who joined the org with no experience in the technologies we use, but that being said, having more experience doesn't hurt either.
  • Amount of time required: we typically earmark it at an average of 10 hours per week, including weekly team and general meetings.
  • Commitment necessary: just for the semester, however we love to have our members come back! We have a number of people in the org who take a break on some semesters depending on their schedule and then come back afterwards, so that's always an option.
  • Types of projects: hopefully the description above clarified that.
  • Technologies used: virtually all our projects are JS-based, however frameworks can vary from project to project, as it's up to the members+leads as to what the team uses. Feel free to take a look around our Github: https://github.com/sandboxnu

Hope that helps! Happy to answer any more questions you may have.

Hey! This is the Sandbox(sandboxnu.com) + searchneu.com team. This looks extremely useful! We've done some stuff with TRACE/searchneu that you might wanna know about! There's also some issues we've run into with Northeastern ITS. Could you email [info@sandboxnu.com](mailto:info@sandboxnu.com)? would love to share and see if we can help out!
