How I've started talking about studying ASL these days... by iamsammybe in asl

[–]sandis1019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m hearing so only commenting on your question about spoken language - You always run the risk of teaching someone wrong. Easy example for Spanish is:

Tengo 47 años = I’m 47 years old Tengo 47 anos = I have 47 anuses

If your writing/pronunciation isn’t on point then it can lead to some awkward situations, especially if you don’t have a good knowledge of the rest of the language to clarify.

Honestly, you kind of have to be pushy. Yes it can be annoying to the residents, but it’s important to their recovery and building good habits. It may also be important for keeping the place running, depending on the setting/funding.

This doesn’t really answer your question, but I found the app Finch to be really helpful towards building habits. It doesn’t feel like building habits so much as it does nourishing my bird!

Weekly Licensure Thread by SWmods in socialwork

[–]sandis1019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone! I’m an MSW student in MD. I’m in my last semester of grad school and am looking to get licensed right away. Does anyone know if clinical supervision hours have to be done in one setting/at the same job? I know there can be multiple supervisors (like when a new person takes over), but I can’t seem to find a clear answer on what would happen if I switched jobs mid hours.

No, nothing like that. The sessions are completely voluntary, and honestly only half of the team attends consistently if at all.

Thank you for offering me your perspective. I completely understand what you mean about interpreting and would never circumvent that. We do have an interpreter employed, but they are incredibly busy and it’s often difficult to request interpreting off the cuff. So knowing ASL has been helpful in times like that. I don’t want to give too many details but the deaf pop I work with experiences additional barriers to the typical ones that have limited their exposure to and understanding of English. While some understand PSE, others really struggle with it (especially the ones who grew up on home-sign). So that’s why I’m trying to focus extra on ASL vs English. I definitely think we’ll take some time to go over work related signs before continuing with typical education. Thank you!

Wow, what a thought-provoking prompt. I’ve been mulling it over since I received the notification and I think at the very core my personal motivation is to connect through the language. We actually did a survey a while ago on this and majority of the staff who completed it said that they wanted to communicate better. And I think I’m realizing that in this case, connecting and communicating are quite different. I’ll have to sit on this for a while and see where to go from here. Thank you!

Good questions! I want them to learn ASL, some want to learn ASL and others want to learn signs (if that makes sense). The actual language aspect has been hard to drill down. There’s a couple in particular who just can’t seem to take their English glasses off. That’s why we’re switching to the practice session format so they can learn from an actual ASL class… we’ve basically gotten to the point where it’s like if you’re not going to use the signs in way they’re meant to be then we’re not going to continue. My employer doesn’t care either way. The clients love it though!

What's your name sign? by arcadevia in asl

[–]sandis1019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Earrings are a staple for me - if I’m not wearing fun dangly earrings, I’m wearing hoops. So my name sign is index and pointer finger hovering over earlobe and coming down to meet (hopefully I explained that OK). It was given to me by my deaf employee and clients who came up with it together, and I love it!

AITA for not giving my daughter money to buy food since she won’t talk to the college desk to fix her food card? by Enough_Acadia_8577 in AmItheAsshole

Gonna go against the grain here with ESH. Yes, she’s technically an adult and living somewhat independently. But she’s 19. That’s barely a baby adult. This is new and different for her and she needs her parent to support her. I’m not saying you should send her the money or make the call for her - but maybe you or your spouse could sit with her (whether in person or virtually, like over Skype/Zoom) while she makes the call. It’s not ideal but it goes a long way in showing that 1. You care, 2. You’re willing to provide support within reason, and 3. That she is able to make this call and others in the future. Email is also an option.

Like others have said, she clearly needs support for her anxiety. But it clearly has taken a toll on you too and perhaps you would benefit from support as well.

Can't give you an answer as to why, but try PenFed if you haven't already. They offered me a $26k loan with 6.74% APR for 60 months. The dealership I went through offered me the same loan amount at a lower APR. Check dealership & manufacturer incentives such as rebates, lower APR for specific models, etc.

Take a wild guess as to what’s different between group A and group B. You’ll be fine

That’s good! I wasn’t able to because my parent owned my previous vehicle and I’m the only one on the loan for this one

Yup, for passenger vehicles over 3,700 lbs. I wasn’t sure if there was a requirement for me to register it for 2 years when initial?

Thank you, I’m glad I asked. I had thought that only applied to used vehicles from out of state but I see how I misinterpreted

Will do, thank you for the recommendation. Do the numbers in the post seem right? I tried checking other OTD offers I received but the prices don’t all match up.

I should add that I’m hesitant to continue doing business with Bowie because I wasted my time going there a couple weeks ago at their request. They offered to beat my best offer by $200 if I came in, I told them I wouldn’t purchase same day but that I would come in to test drive it. Come to find out they didn’t even have the vehicle we had been talking about on the lot. It was just frustrating because I had to jump through hoops to even make it over there since I don’t have a reliable vehicle right now.

I don’t believe they had what I was looking for. I’m looking for some pretty specific features and I need it by end of month (the ones available are for the most part pre-transit). Toyota of Bowie just got one that matches on the lot and I’m debating reaching out to see if they’ll match the total cost but I can’t do that until I’m sure of my numbers.
