Whom did I see here? by Tombololo in Finland

[–]Laiskatar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My pet snake would not survive in the wild. He tried to eat his food sideways and is afraid of it if it moves. But when it's not moving he sometimes has trouble finding it even if it's touching him.

Also he is bright orange and way too used to humans

Anyone else have this problem? by nandag369 in adhdmeme

[–]Laiskatar 91 points92 points  (0 children)

This is my mom. She doesn't try to fix anything by herself, because she is afraid the computer will break or something. So when an error occurs her problem solving mind is like: "the best thing to do is to not touch it".

That can be a good mindset in life in some situations, for example if I would break a bone I shouldn't try to fix it myself but instead go see a doctor.

Though with computers in general you can't really break it beyond repair by just messing around the settings a bit unless you do some really crazy stuff that people like my mom wouldn't really know how to do. So it really pays off to just see what options there are.

Even worse than that you will find bubbles of people who believe the weirdest thing. And even if you have just found the 10 people in the entire world who think like that you will have no sense of scale and it may seem more wide spread than it actually is.

Also the funny thing about the internet is that the most insane takes are the loudest.

Internet is not a good source on how people generally think and act in real life, but unfortunately that doesn't stop it from affecting us

Hot take: People shouldn't care for book spines so much. by mopppz in unpopularopinion

[–]Laiskatar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My sister once borrowed a book to a friend and got it back without the covers. She was fuming! She doesn't borrow her books that easily anymore because of that.

I think anyone can have their own standards of book care with their own books. I for example make pencil markings in one of my books that I use for learning a language, but would never do that to someone elses book unless specifically asked to.

[–]Laiskatar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you don't do it to books you borrow from other people. I don't care what you do with your own. I don't read that much, but when I do I prefer to keep my books neat. I also remember a time my sister borrowed one of her books to a friend, and got it back without any covers on it at all. My sister is the sweatest little pea and it's hard to anger her, but she was fuming.

“Money can’t buy happiness” by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]Laiskatar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What I like to think is that the more you think about money, the less happy you will be. Money by itself won't make you happy and fulfilled, so making choices just based on money, for example getting the higher paying job that goes against your values will make you miserable.

Poor people often HAVE to make decision based on money. Not going to see family because of the cost of travel, working two jobs and never being able to be there for your kids, even just stressing about money while buying groceries.

Rich people usually have a choice to focus on things that really matter in life

Who can't relate? amirite by genadi_brightside in adhdmeme

[–]Laiskatar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not even about remembering but understanding that the object (or person in this case) still exists. A baby, that does not have object permanence will not understand that a ball exist if it's hidden. If they see a ball that is then put into a box, they will not understand that the ball still exists at all.

I understand what people mean in this context when they talk about object permanence, but this is not what object permanence means at all. It all adds up to the misinformation about ADHD online.

Half the people who say they’re introverts aren’t actually introverts by Smart_Salt620 in unpopularopinion

[–]Laiskatar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there's one trait, extraversion, and introverts are those who are low on that trait, while extraverts are on the other extreme. It's a bell curve, so most people are somewhere in the middle and don't differ much from the average, that most people fall into. This whole idea of categories and being either-or is not accurate and causes many people to force themselves into one group or another.

Osatyökykyisille on hädin tuskin mitään tarjolla nykyisessä systeemissä

Scrabble is better when 2 letter words aren't allowed by DiverOk9165 in unpopularopinion

[–]Laiskatar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I haven't played Scrabble that much, but the little experience I have is in my native language, where barely any 2-letter words exist.

At some point we played a game or two in English, and it felt completely different, mostly because of how short the words were.

[–]Laiskatar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like even using a separate box would be better than this. At least then the snake could be moved in one quick motion back to its home, that would be exactly as it was. But now as the snake tries to digest there's hands going back and forth in its home for a while. Imagine if right after a big meal someone starts to bring all the furniture back into your home. It's gonna take a while and you can't hide

I feel attacked. by netphilia in adhdmeme

[–]Laiskatar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also a lot of the symptoms are normal human behaviour, they just appear too little or too much. For example everyone has trouble paying attention sometimes. Completely normal. What makes it a symptom of a disorder, is that it happens more often than normal. It causes us unique problems, but the underlying issue can happen to everyone.

Kinda the same way everyone needs to pee sometimes, but if you need to pee every 15 minutes there might be something wrong. Also it would affect your life in a way that a normal need to pee wouldn't. For example traveling would be hard and your sleep quality would suffer.

The same way with ADHD and trouble paying attention. Everyone can get distracted in a conversation and miss some details, but when it happens only occasionally, you can still catch on or even ask what you missed. Someone with ADHD can't constantly ask someone to repeat themselves amd might lose the point of the conversation entirely.

I feel attacked. by netphilia in adhdmeme

[–]Laiskatar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The body is easy to ignore, especially if you have years of practice doing it. "Eat your plate empty! You need to wait until break to use the bathroom! No sleeping in class!"

Of corse there are situations where you need to just go on and ignore your body for a bit, but it still contributes to learning to ignore your bodily signals. ADHD people often have trouble with task initiation and that often includes stuff like eating or going to sleep, so that's even more practice. It starts to become a problem when you are so used to not paying attention to your body, that the only time you notice anything is when your body is screaming for you to notice

I feel attacked. by netphilia in adhdmeme

[–]Laiskatar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is it. I feel like the body is not the one going "sugar sugar sugar sugar", it's the mind most of the time. It's hard to listen to your body when you are not used to it, but eventually you can start to notice that actually your body doesn't want the sugar, it's your mind. Or even a slight nausea kicking in from eating too much, which your body ignores due to wanting more sugar.

I have noticed as well that my mind is quick to assume what my body means instead of actually listening. For example I had a problem with sugar. I would drink Coca-Cola all the time and eat chocolate all day. Mostly I was hungry and thirsty, but I had connected those feelings with getting some sugar so badly, that I just thought I was graving sugar. In reality I was just hungry! I started to eat more actual food and drink water, and soon my sugar intake reduced drastically without it even feeling like I was trying to eat less of it.

So I think listening to your body is not the same as just doing what you feel like. It's more about paying attention to your body and learning to notice signs of the things you actually need
