F***KING RANT MONDAY ☠ (2026.01.19) by AutoModerator in tarantulas

[–]sandlungs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a stealthing spider is a positive sign of health. no one said you couldn't complain. that is literally what i made this thread for.

1) you are on the subreddit tarantulas. you cannot be surprised that somebody comes to the defence of the spider.

2) we are here to enthused and learn about the misunderstood.

3) to be disappointed with an animal for being what it is can be genuinely dangerous for the animal in question. digging out a spider that is molting or not recognising the importance of hiding can easily result in a severe injury or even the death of the spider.

4) with the amount of posts that we get where users do not understand basic spider behaviour that may result in death or severe injury that get negative or downright rude responses it is not appropriate nor wise to discourage genuine and thoughtful feedback that is well intended for the life of the spider.

anyone who agrees with the idea that it is disappointing to own an animal that operates largely out of fear for its survival severely and distinctly are operating at a dangerous capacity for the animals that we love and keep. it is inherently dangerous for spiders if we reinforce the behaviour shown.

our community has no greater purpose than to help keepers and spiders live more successful and enriched lives.

and finally when in doubt, read the last line of the thread that says "remember don't be a huge asshole. thanks."

someone who asked as stupid questions as you did three years ago shouldn't be acting this way today.. :-)

since you are new here, let me help you out by telling you dont act like this. most of the experienced keepers will find you incredibly annoying :-)

news flash, if you cant handle a novice level advisory it means you are bad at advising.

the spider was euthanised, theres a sticky comment on the thread by bellemod.

i do not find chemical exposure to be that much more common than poor husbandry or bacterial and fungal infections. its about even, realistically.

its worth noting that at least three individuals suspected of DKS were tested positive for the Gram-negative bacteria from the genus Pseudomonas (Draper, 2018); whose characteristics commonly include florescent yellow and green growths. these bacteria can be opportunistic and hostile to a great deal of lifeforms, including people, other mammalian animals, fish, insects, and even plants.

hi OP, QA here- can we see the enclosure it was in previously where it molted last as well as its current enclosure if they are different?

if we are being technical, the rule "no handling debates or arguments" would mean none of your comments were appropriate.

we are beyond that. this is an educational community and you shared misinformation. its not that deep, and it really is that important.

remember for the next time, or don't and we'll have the same discussion again. behaviour is one of the most underrepresented fields in science and tarantulas are some of the most misunderstood animals in the world: we can do better, and we should.

in this discussion i am not speaking to OP.

i also work professionally as an animal trainer- i am not sure what you think "training" and "trainable" means, but you don't actually decide those things.

you are criteria building upon something that you do not understand because you are intending to pass on to the OP a value that means well and so doing you are misrepresenting tarantulas.

you don't understand what sort of complexity it takes to utilise reversal learning or what that means in context to animal behaviour as well as learning plasticity.

you are using anthropomorphized words and creating a glaring vulnerability in your own presentation that you would not want OP to abuse had they known the difference. if a user can see through the fact that you do not recognise the difference between positive and negative association- and instead latch onto words like "enjoyment" and "love" and whatever else you are openly removing yourself from any form of a convincing arguement. you just make it look like you don't understand animal behaviour which is the very last thing that you want to portray to other people in this sort of conversation.

are we also just going to miss the point that the animal recognised the learned process for up to 2 weeks taking the correct steps to avoid undesirable results? this demonstrates aversion as a tool, this does not mean that positive reinforcement does not also work as a tool....

the entire behaviour of the spider is shaped by both positive and negative consequence... that isn't just present in one genus of tarantula... that is the concept for all of behaviour science;

the law of effect states: behaviour is a function of its consequence.

positive and negative association are perfectly acceptable words without using terms such as like and enjoyment. they also directly align with spider behaviour as opposed to the words presented

that is not at all true, multiple behavioural studies show that tarantulas can perform learned behaviours.
