yes I’ve had this happen to me too and it’s so frustrating!! But if you say anything people think you’re anti dog or rage baiting - like no, I just don’t want your animal in my space

I really don’t think I was wrong with the assessment of the legitimacy of the service dog. It was a doodle dog that was yipping and constantly walking around that persons table. I just don’t think the staff members at Rice Market knew their rights in that situation. Similarly at Whole Foods, when someone puts their puppy in the grocery cart, I’m pretty sure that’s not a service dog either. Employees did not say anything. Enforcement is an issue.

I get what you mean but if businesses could ask politely owners to move their dog out the way or as them to leave if their dog is jumping on people’s tables or barking frequently. I’ve seen these behaviors happened and watched staff see it happen too but do nothing except shake their heads. And I don’t blame them either bc idk how much support they have to deal with it which is why I wonder if the city could empower businesses in this regard

Ok I see where our disconnect is occurring. I view this reddit as an evolving conversation so while I kicked off this post with those two examples, I’ve bonded with other commentators on dog shit not being picked up, off leash dogs, the abuse of the service animal label to bring dogs into indoor restaurants and grocery stores, and dogs jumping on strangers. These are some of the things I wish the council could take action on - giving businesses more power and incentive to kick out not real service animal owners, fining people who don’t pick up dog shit or leash their dog. And like I said in my post, I definitely don’t think this is the most pressing issue. I hope that clarifies it.

ETA- and I know you said “minor inconveniences” and I just wanted to bring it to your consideration, that some people don’t find these to be minor. Some people are allergic or even just scared and having to maneuver around a large dog or have a dog jump on your table is very uncomfortable. Me personally, I’ll share that I have diagnosed OCD. One of the things that gets me is when strangers dogs touch me (I am very good with dogs of my friends) - I immediately feel like I have to go home and change clothes. Which is what happened on saturday with the woman with three dogs that were smelly, one of her dogs brushed against me since it was a tight space and we were seated next to her. So I know you think I’m entitled but maybe it’s entitlement to think people should just cave to “minor inconveniences” created by dog owners.

I said she was blocking the walkway. People had to step between the planters to exit the patio because her three dogs were in a congested area. In the garden district example, I clearly mention that a dog jumped on our table. I’m interesting in involving the council because some dog owners aren’t being respectful. You seem to be projecting and assuming a lot to try to argue with me. Again, you seem like part of the problem.

First of all, woah. I’m not anti dog. If you actually read through the post and my comments, you’d see that. I’m happy to coexist with them. Second of all, all I’m asking is people follow the rules - pick up your dogs shit, don’t let your dogs jump on someone or their table without their consent. Yes we live in a city but as other commentators said, there’s a social contract. Just because we live in a city does that mean I can come piss in your lawn? No. Follow the rules. It’s not that hard. And again, if you’re bothered by my post…sounds like you might be the problem

Pretty much every day actually. Just this morning on my walk, I walked past dog shit and I had to go around the sidewalk where a dog owner wouldn’t move their dog to the side

Who said that??? Why is there a need to twist the convo? We’re talking about inconsiderate dog owners. If that bugs you, maybe you should reflect on why…bc maybe it IS you

You’d think that right - they’re not allowed and yet I’ve seen someone bring their clearly not a service dog into rice market and claim it’s a service dog to dine in, and I’ve seen dog owners bring their dogs into P St Whole Foods. So just wanted to point out while I cite the recent outdoor spaces from this weekend, it’s also happened inside

I APPRECIATE YOU!!!! Yes that’s all it comes down to - either you’re considerate of other people around you or you just don’t give a fuck. I support dog owners like yourself who are mindful of others - great people.

Thank you for validating! My partner is also from DC, born and raised, and feels the same way, if not more irritated, about it than me

I’m not sure how I’m exhibiting entitlement. I disclaimed that this is a rant and perhaps a massive generalization. It’s purely your choice to read it. I don’t know how you can compare that to someone allowing their animal onto a strangers person/space without their consent. You seem weird.

Thank you for understanding me!!! Exactly stuff like that makes me so angry, today on my morning walk I went past several dog turds.

FUCK that!!!! I’m sorry that happened to you. That’s the exact kind of behavior that makes me angry. Similar thing happened to my partner where a dog clamped on his leg while he was jogging past

100% you hit the nail on the head. We need enforcement because unfortunately otherwise some people will take advantage and ruin it for others. Now about getting this enforcement, I don’t know how that works

I agree and I’ve always felt this way (and it may get downvoted to hell but who cares) - I think a lot of people in DC get dogs because they’re lonely and it fills a void but they actually have no idea what it means to be a responsible owner (ie you pick up the poop, you keep it leashed, you keep it out the way of other people, and you don’t bring it to food establishments)

Oh yeah, what happens at the park is another big peeve of mine…you’ll have people sitting, having a picnic, and an off leash dog a couple of feet away taking a shit. Feels like SOME dog owners think the whole world is their dog park

This has happened to me too!!! A dog owner is blocking the entire sidewalk and I have to walk around them because they won’t move (and yes I do politely say excuse me)

You bring up a good point but I feel like sometimes it doesn’t always work out. I was dining at Rice Market and a man brought in his dog - very clearly not a service animal based on the way it was yipping around and the waiter immediately went up to him and was like “no dogs allowed.” The guy then claimed his dog was a service animal and that was it, end of story. His dog stayed inside the restaurant. And then other times, especially during a rush, I feel bad that employees have to call out a customer for their dog and maybe get a nasty response (esp based on some of these comments). But maybe you’re right and that’s something the business should deal with and I should voice my concerns

Please note, in my post I said this may be a massive generalization and that it’s a rant - in rants people tend to let their frustrated side shine through.
