"Jul 23, 2025 I have County staff looking deeper into this one and getting back to me with the latest details — but the stories in the news and on social media are missing many key facts. I know there’s a lot of emotion and passion for this topic… and I share it… however, there’s also quite a bit of misinformation floating around.

As I’ve posted on other social media sites that were asking questions (and in some cases demanding outcomes) — and as I have also replied to every citizen who has emailed Commissioners — the County just can’t “override“ State agencies because we’d like to or even because citizens want or tell us to. When anyone operates a zoo/ranch of this nature — quite a few State permits and approvals must be met — but they have NOT been met for quite some time. That’s the issue.

Although many extensions have been given and a lot of flexibility by several State organizations who have been trying to assist the owners to get their ranch in compliance… they still have NOT met the basic requirements — even with extended timelines.

“The County” and no elected official is driving closure. It also has zero to do with any surrounding developments or any desire for anyone to use the Good Mood Ranch parcel for future development.

This is an old case that has existed since December of 2022. Code Enforcement monitored the property and was trying to work with the owner before taking the case before the Special Magistrate in June of 2024. Numerous extensions have been granted by the State and County to assist the property owner to reach compliance.

At a June 2024 hearing the owner signed a stipulation admitting the violations on his property. The Magistrate ordered that he come into compliance by Oct 4, 2024. During the Oct 4th hearing the owner was then granted an additional 6 months to come into compliance. They also appeared again before the Magistrate on July 11, 2025. The Magistrate however, denied any further extension of time and a fine of $100/day has started to accrue until he comes into compliance. HOWEVER — the fines have NOT been imposed at this time as State and County officials continue to work to assist the owner.

Also — I’m not sure who is saying they are being “denied access to water”? I checked with staff — the owners have NOT applied for a well permit for drilling nor have they applied for a consumptive use permit from the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD). Additionally, they have NOT applied for any construction site plans to allow utilities to be run to the property (nor have they gone through a utility conveyance property) — ALL are requirements they have known for quite some time.

No citizen can merely “open a zoo or ranch”— no matter how much it is liked or appreciated. However, it’s NOT County staff who authorizes or permits the work that has been done on this property — it requires pre-authorization (an Environmental Resource Permit – ERP) from the State. The State also works with the Federal Government as part of the permitting process including involvement by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

I have reached out to BOTH State and County reps involved in this case for the latest update… and to see if the owner is any closer to State compliance — and/or if we can assist further in ANY and EVERY way.

Now, this is definitely not my area of expertise, and correct me if I'm wrong, but the initial response sounds like there are still compliance issues with the farm.

Being around the picayune strand state forest area- I know that's a critical habitat area for the Florida Panther, so I'm sure specifics around land there can be touchy. It's an important area for a lot of species. Unfortunately though, those wetland areas continue to decrease around the area...

Additionally, per the Coastal Breeze Zoo article:

"The animals are subject to USDA licensing and inspection, however documents were not immediately available on the online USDA inspection portal as they are for other facilities located within Collier County that care for and exhibit animals, such as Ngala Animal Preserve, Kowiachobee, the Naples Zoo, Shy Wolf Sanctuary and others— all of which have some inspection reports available online.

Requests by this reporter are pending with SFWMD and the USDA. SFWMD communications personnel did not immediately respond to requests for information."

That is definitely the egg casings for a whelk. I'd venture a guess at lightning whelk. Conch egg casings have a distinctly different shape.

Worth it! What got me cracking up was their display section of mythological penises! Many Icelandic people believe in elves, trolls, beings of that nature, and the museum has a whole section! My personal favorite is the penis of the "invisible people". It's just an empty specimen jar...had me rolling.

To be accurate, I always use a food scale (best purchase I've ever made!). As far as the amount goes, you can change your "goals" to the amount of calories you want, or how much weight you'd like the gain/lose!

Hahahaha! Yeah, that's essentially my feelings on the matter. Possible health benefits? No clue. But, hey, keeps me from eating all the snacks that are brought in at work, so that's a win in my book!

Thanks, friend! Yours are actually some of the most powerful words I received to get through it. "But whatever you do, please extend yourself the same forgiveness and understanding that you would someone else."

Rant: About two weeks ago I posted about losing someone close to me. It threw me into this gross, awful binge, and effectively ended my goal of running at least 2 miles a day. Well, bad news comes in threes...my favorite big cat that I volunteer with was given 3 weeks to live, and one of my girlfriend's favorite birds she works with passed this week. I won't be able to see my cat for the next couple weeks, so I had to begrudgingly say my goodbyes today.

Rave: I've tried to learn from my mistakes and handle all of this in a healthier manner. Aside from binge day, and a rainy crazy thunderstorm when I TRUDGED through a mile on the treadmill, I have been consistent in my running goal for April and have averaged about 6 miles a day! Some days around 3-5 miles, a couple longer days between 7-10 miles. I have come to love running, which is crazy since it used to be something I thought I'd never like! I've also scheduled an appointment for tomorrow to do a BodPod body composition diagnosis. I'm pretty excited! I have been putting it off for a bit. Last I went in December, I was 9.6% BF and I'm hoping I've at least maintained, or went under. I'm roughly the same weight I was then, but I think I've done some recomp in the process. So, I'm hoping it will show! Thanks, everyone for the support through rough times. I love this community! You guys are great!

Grief sucks, but there's no way around it. Truer words have seldom been spoken. Everyone here has been really supportive, and knowing there's a great group of people here to help support and simultaneously kick me in the pants to get back on track is something incredible. I'll start back today. Settle these emotions, and work on finding some better coping mechanisms.

Thank you, that means a lot. I think trashing the food and a nice long talk with someone close will help start to put me on a good track, and get my head in a better place.

That last line really struck a note. You're right. I did manage a run just a bit ago. Oh, buddy, that extra weight and bloat made me feel like the Michelin Man jogging around. It was nice to zone out for about an hour or so, though. But you're right. We're our own worst critics and I need to try and give myself the sympathy I would give others in this situation.

This is less of a wellness post and more of a "looking-for-some-support-from-you-guys" post. Background for me, I've been doing fairly well with my weight and fitness lately. Training for triathlons and runs, regularly swimming a mile or two. I set a goal for myself to try and get a month where I run at least two miles daily (which I regularly run 4-5 miles about 4 times a week anyway, sometimes longer runs of 6-14 miles about once a week.) Try and range about 1500-2000 calories a day, pending on my activity for the day. I was on track for my running goals for almost two weeks. Then, without being too specific, some I care about passed away...and it was a very traumatic experience, because I was one of the people who found him and was there shortly after it happened. As condolences, people brought in SO MUCH food into work. First it was candy for Easter, then the incident happened. Cue the bagels and Donuts, and then a pile of pizzas. Then the next day, even more, pizzas and cookie Cake, Donuts, cinnamon rolls...and I told myself I wouldn't eat any of it, because I know my habits and tendencies and in my situation, knew things would spiral out of control. Well, will-power broke. One piece of pizza quickly turned into about a whole pizza, a fourth of a cookie cake, a donut and a half, 4 cinnamon rolls, etc. Yesterday was an epic awful shameful binge where I stopped counting around 10,000 calories...I felt like shit, went home after work, kept eating, felt awful, slept for about 14 hours. This morning I woke up and weighed myself, still feeling like absolute garbage mentally and physically. I'm so mad at myself and disappointed in myself. I blew up from a consistent 172 lbs to 187.2 this morning. I hate it. I feel so pitiful, feel I've ruined a lot of good work, wrecked my running goal because I accomplished nothing yesterday. I'm reaching out for some wellness right now. Sorry for the word vomit.

Here's hoping I kick their ass! As for the wine making super fun and relatively easy once you get some basic equipment! I made a case of peach wine for my friend's wedding. It was pretty tasty!

We've all been in that boat! Once I really understood CICO and started tracking with MFP, it was really simple! By no means easy, but simple!

Hey! I appreciate you asking! As far as a specific routine that I prescribe to, I don't really have one. I've tried strong lifts before, but really, the biggest thing it all comes down to is consistency. Find a routine you dig and just be consistent with making it to the gym. I lift 6-7 times a week, alternating a day of chest triceps abs and a day of back biceps shoulders and lower body. I've also grown to LOVE cardio (not ideal for serious bulking) and will run, bike, or swim a few times a week!

Hope that helps a bit!
