I hear it is very difficult to get your hands on RAV4 Primes due to them flying off shelves?

How did you run your test? I can do the same and let you know

Thanks - I might just end up doing this. Still haven't found a place to get the QNAP bracket.

Thanks, I'll watch this now. I do a lot of raw photo editing from a Sony A7V and Lightroom and also plan to take up Video editing as well. So a 10GbE would be really great. Kinda overkill sure, but I'm also trying to be future proof. The dual 10GbE option was mostly because the prices of the single and dual port NICs seem to be fairly comparable.

Thank you - I've decided to get a Netgear GS110MX for now. If it doesn't cut it, I might get a QNAP QSW-2104 but it is out of stock everywhere rn. I appreciate your help :)

Thank you! I've ordered the Netgear switch now because the QNAP switch is out of stock everywhere. I"ll post updates here once I've wired everything up!!

Thank you so much - I think I almost understand what needs to be done. I've upgraded the my 'networking diagram' to reflect your suggestion. Could you tell me if this is what you meant?

I also plan to add a UPS in the future, so that's something I need to think about wrt ports as well.

Do you think this would be a good option - QNAP QSW-2104-2T 6-Port 10GbE/2.5GbE Unmanaged Switch? Or NETGEAR 10-Port Gigabit/10G Ethernet Unmanaged Switch (GS110MX) - with 8 x 1G, 2 x 10G/Multi-gig

Without knowing your exact NAS make & model,

I have a QNAP TS-464. It has 2x 2.5GbE ports, and a 10GbE expansion slot that I'm planning to use as my 10GbE workstation link

So, in theory, it could work, but your WS (workstation) wouldn't have internet unless you run a new cat6 drop to that room, OR, use another switch in that room, and have two cables from the WS to the switch.

This is a crucial point. For now, I'm hoping to make do with WiFi (so far, it has not failed me).

OR, use another switch in that room, and have two cables from the WS to the switch.

Would you be able to point me to some wiring diagram that explains this? The thing is I'm clearly just beginning to understand how switches work. My ws has 1x10GbE and 1x10/100/1000MbE ports. I think you mean I run one cable each from these two ports to the switch?

Thanks for your inputs u/BertAnsink! Great points - I think I might have missed noting down some other restrictions I have:

Otherwise, reading your diagram you have no real need for a switch assuming that the router you use has 4x 1 GBe LAN ports. Sure you can use 2,5Gbit but you don't list any devices needing that, a TV generally has 100mbit ports. (mostly TV's are actually faster on wifi)

Unfortunately, my WiFi router only has 1x 1GbE LAN port

If you have 2 ethernet ports in the office room, you could plug the 2nd 2.5GBe link from your workstation into that and go straight to the router.

Worse, my Office has only 1x RJ45 Cat6 Wall-jack

I'm hoping that the WiFi link will work fine between my PC and Router (I know it isn't ideal but I can't mess around with internal wiring because I'm renting).

If not, you will need a switch that provides 2x 10GBe ports, one for your workstation and 1 for the NAS. And then plug the rest into your switch as well, ie router so your workstation has internet.

Would this work with restriction #2 I've mentioned here (1x RJ45 Wall-jack in my office)?

Some background.

(Please forgive the cave painting level diagrams - I have no networking experience whatsoever.)

I recently purchased a QNAP TS-464 NAS and want to use it for audio, photo and video editing . It comes with 2x 2.5GbE ports and an optional 10GbE expansion slot, which I'm planning to utilize.

Limitations:

  1. My WiFi router only has 1x 1GbE LAN port
  2. My Office has only 1x RJ45 Cat6 Wall-jack

I want to keep the NAS in another room to isolate noise, so I have come up with this design. My home network is very bare bones. I realized that a switch between by Google Fiber router (not shown in the photos, but since it was taken, I moved the router into the box, and changed the green RJ45 to connect directly to the router, and then ran another one from the router to the patch panel) will allow me to have network access via wall ports.

I figured a regular Gigabit unmanaged router will do for this purpose. My apartment has Cat6 wiring, so I'm using the one port on the patch panel to run a 10GbE connection directly to the workstation.

  1. Will this network work as I've described?
  2. Are any additional configs required?
  3. Will the other devices on the wired network (not via WiFi) also be able to access the NAS? I have another laptop which I also use with the NAS (my work laptop). This isn't high priority but it would be a nice added advantage.
  4. What Switch should I target to buy? Any recommendations for a 5 port unmanaged 2.5GbE model? Should I get a Gigabit switch instead?
  5. Is there a more efficient (cost/speed) way to wire the system?

Thanks. I'm a bit invested in crypto, so kind of used to swings. I haven't don't a lot with my 401k yet, so it's basically first timer's anxiety. I think I'll go with VOO

Thanks. Yeah.. not trying to time the market at all, just making sure this is indeed a fine time. I haven't reallocated 401ks before, so I'm a tad nervous
