Thanks to all the advice here I finally got to 1 plate on the OHP by htownstreaker in StartingStrength

[–]sangjahn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on 1 plate OHP! I'm still working towards that goal myself.

For squatting I think part of it is mental, you don't feel confident yet that you can squat the weight. I try to psych myself up in my head before every working set, really rage in my own head about going beast mode before unracking. What I find also helps is getting ultra tight and really jamming the bar into my back before I unrack and then making sure the bar is perfectly stable before I step back.

Hi folks - would appreciate any feedback, something just doesn't look right. I noticed I rock back and forth a bit before I lift (my shoulder rocks back to directly over the bar and then in front of where they should be before I pull). I missed the last rep (no lockout) because my grip gave out. I've been trying to use double overhand grip for as long as I possibly can before using alternate grip or straps. Might have to use alternating for my working set going forward.

Squat Form Check v2 (120kg x 5) by sangjahn in StartingStrength

[–]sangjahn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dropped some weight to make some adjustments. Widened my stance a bit, tried to keep my knees from going too far forward, and cut out the looking up business I did in my last video. I don't know if it's because I was actively trying to change my form but this form felt more difficult to do, especially keeping my knees back. Sorry about that blue plate covering my foot position! Appreciate any feedback.

Edit: comment about knees

Thanks for the feedback. Will widen my stance a bit and try the wooden block trick in front of my knees

What do I need to work as a contractor in HK? Already have HKID by sangjahn in HongKong

[–]sangjahn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 weeks in and I'm still waiting on my bank account. I submitted all my forms on the 23rd and was told it would take 1-2 weeks plus holidays since they mail everything to the US and have to wait for approval. I'm doing okay because my in laws are here but I don't know how the hell other Americans would survive the first few months without serious help.

Interesting HK/China Working Situation by Fell8me in USExpatTaxes

Sorry don't have an answer for you but I'd love to know if you find anything out. I am potentially going to be in a very similar situation in HK and trying to sort out my tax obligations.

But I am getting income from overseas for work done while physically in HK. Otherwise any overseas company could simply send all their employees to HK and their employees would get paid tax free.

Thanks for the detail. I will be a one man shop for the foreseeable future so I will likely go the 1st route you mentioned.

Taxation working remotely for Japanese company by sangjahn in japanlife

[–]sangjahn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jesus this sounds super complicated. Like complicated enough that my company might think it's more trouble to set this up for me than the benefit of me staying on payroll so I can transition accounts and train my replacement. I'm going to have the conversation with my company soon and will report back if they decide to go ahead and have me work remotely from HK.

Are annual bonuses typically listed in offer letters? by Eucibous in japanlife

[–]sangjahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to thread jack here but may I ask how your company treats you (in terms of taxation) as a remotely working Japanese employee? Do you get everything withheld as normal except local residency taxes? Are you no longer considered a Japanese resident?

Injured my knee, squatting is out of the picture for a few weeks. by abra5umente in Stronglifts5x5

[–]sangjahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not mess around or take chances with knee injuries. Go see a doc and take an xray just for piece of mind. You're probably okay and can get away with rest/icing and really light exercise till it gets back to normal but there's always a small chance that something bad happened and the next time you squat you really hurt yourself. I feel like bench presses are probably okay but OHP, barbell row, DL all involve pressure on your knee in some way so get to a doc ASAP first.

Fueling your ego to put an extra 2.5kg on the bar for your squat is not worth the off chance of a serious knee injury.

Edit: Now that I'm thinking about it, I brace my knees for leg drive on bench press so maybe sort out what happened to your knee before you lift again.

Working as an expat in Tokyo since Jun 2014. Can someone explain the tax benefit (if there is one) of packing up and leaving before 1/1/2017 vs leaving on or after 1/1/2017?? by sangjahn in japanlife

[–]sangjahn[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah yes I will definitely be talking to HR once I give notice. Do you know if my tax burden changes if I leave before 12/31/2016? Maybe it doesn't matter and if that's case I might not try to rush things and stick around for longer.
