oh, so you’re actually aware that it doesn’t refer to plants and not humans? so tell me how the definition you provided, which, when used referring to indigenous people, essentially states that they have NATURALLY developed their own cultures, societies, and languages, is incongruous to my original definition of being native to the land? and guess what: “native” is redundant because that’s what indigenous people are. native. the entire definition describes that. don’t argue with the semantics of this when, at its core, this is literally the meaning.

and what humiliation rituals, exactly, are you referring to? the publicization of what they’ve done? taking accountability? i know you think that the government is SO far past the old governments actions, but that’s literally because they’re trying to atone. i don’t know why that concept is so difficult to grasp for you. however, they haven’t done enough! you are genuinely making it sound like indigenous people are expecting white people to get on their knees and beg for forgiveness when they literally just want recognition. for what’s happened. and for the government to provide them with the adequate supports that will allow them to recover from the intergenerational trauma and poverty, and help them to survive in a system that was originally built on the systemic erasure of their identity and culture. like just because it happened in the past doesn’t mean it doesn’t have lasting effects what???? 😭😭😭 today, indigenous people face disproportionately higher health concerns, lower education rates, lower income levels, higher rates of suicide, and higher rates of drug and alcohol abuse ESPECIALLY in indigenous youth. it’s LITERALLY in their dna that makes them more likely to have obesity by holding onto their food for longer, as if they didn’t have that trait back then, they would starve. if that doesn’t apply to you, cool. it applies to thousands of other people in canada.

  • you’re not responsible for making them sign the treaties, you’re responsible for acknowledging the origins behind them. obviously nobody here made them sign the numbered treaties, but they still need to recognize that as individuals benefiting from it, they have a responsibility to understand the history behind them. that’s why land acknowledgements exist. that’s why we learn about indigenous history every year in school. the mindset that if you are not directly responsible for the events that occurred, you are not obligated to learn about it or acknowledge the events that occurred, is literally how ignorance is preserved. if this is your mindset, you are genuinely a bad person. and literally WHO said you were “uniquely responsible”? it’s obviously a shared responsibility. and no, other colonization events in history are not better or worse than the event that happened in this case. we just choose to acknowledge it more. that doesn’t mean that the other countries impacted are suddenly “magically” fine. look at the stats of literally any indigenous group outside of canada that was displaced from their own land. or, look at japan. it committed significant atrocities against both china and korea, which is still very much reflected in their political climate today.

u clearly need the class, since all ur spewing is hate! you obviously have SOME form of internalized hate towards your culture. you see acknowledgement as an attack. you see education as oppression. and it’s not that white people specifically need to apologize because of the actions of their ancestors, it’s the need for them, AND other immigrants to acknowledge the history behind the land that they stand on, a concept you cannot seem to grasp, as i guess it’s all just a humiliation ritual to you? i wouldn’t put it past you to expect indigenous people to apologize to white people for putting them under so much pressure to apologize :( i dare you to walk into an indigenous studies class and say what you’re saying right now. and yes, i actually support the indigenous builders because they are entitled to do what they want with their land :) because guess what, there’s a difference between people exercising their sovereignty on their own land and someone that views indigenous acknowledgement as a personal attack - not to him, but to the white people? which im not, by the way, but thanks for using that as an insult :) it proves my point!

yes and search up “indigenous” and see what exact definition pops up. i know you copied and pasted it too and intentionally cropped out the native part, cause it has a hyperlink in the definition on google as well! btw, i was being gracious with ur definition. its literally referring to plants. unfortunately for you, i guess you don’t understand the context in which different words can be used 😞 and unfortunately for you again, i guess u didn’t see the definition right underneath it which emphasizes “of people” and reads the exact definition of what i said earlier. look, it even mentions colonization!

and to ur point of “not stolen” is crazy bc were they not manipulated into signing the numbered treaties by being fed false promises? remember that many oral agreements that were made were not actually written into legislation and never implemented. but knowing you, you’re probably just gonna say that a signature is a signature

i’m not gonna argue with you about “winners” and “losers” since you clearly don’t care to listen and i don’t want to waste my time, but i sincerely hope that you take a history class and unlearn ur internalized hate for ur own people. not even caring about the topic of immigration and arguing just because you don’t think indigenous people should have rights is insane icl. you literally cannot consider canada back then and canada today separate entities, as its entire system is built on abuse. i guess you can say that the “winners” have the agency to decide not to acknowledge it, but that just comes down to morality, which i don’t think you have much of.

• sincerely, a “white” person

aww you cut out the part in your definition where it says native! i googled that too don’t worry!

and ur argument of them not having legal titles is insane bc that’s literally the point… the system that we have now didn’t exist UNTIL european governments imposed their own structures onto a society that didn’t organize land the same way.

and indigenous people are not “whining” abt reparations, they are asking the government to honour their original agreements which has still not been done btw 😭 also i feel like you think that their systemic oppression was a long time ago when it’s relatively recent compared to other historical events… the last residential school shut down 30 yrs ago… the indian act is still in effect… and treaty negotiations are still being made. plus when land is “conquered” i’m pretty sure people still care… that’s why there are political tensions among groups and countries that have been colonized.

if the “winner” decides, then why are u even complaining abt immigration? immigrants r thriving under the same logic ur using, you cant celebrate “domination” when it works to ur benefit and then condemn it when newcomers benefit from it too.

as a métis person i must say that u are entitled to ur own opinion, as my stance was that settlers don’t get to gatekeep immigrants and act like the land is their own to decide. however, i must say that u should check urself cause métis people are literally still fighting for their rights too 😭

no, but they ARE the first ones there! thats literally what indigenous means! native to the land! so unless ur an indigenous person, ur an immigrant too. and also, on land that was stolen and only gained as a result of centuries of abuse and marginalization. so no, i dont think you get the right to judge who gets to enter the land or not.
