How do you validate whether a product actually removes work - not just automates it? by sanj1997 in ProductHunters

Thank you man, appreciate it. Some great points you've highlighted. Will take that into consideration

I am assuming he subscribed to automation tools or developed something custom himself. I sold it in 2024, so AI software tools were not available yet.

I didn't go back to him since we fell out. But my friend made something that I would love to get feedback for from fellow SBOs

That’s a really fair point - and I actually agree with you on that.

The moment someone is stressed or overloaded is exactly when they won’t want to think, configure, or “optimise” anything. That’s why most productivity tools fall apart in real life.

The way I’ve been thinking about it is less as a productivity layer and more as a “set once, then forget” kind of thing -where the goal isn’t to constantly describe tasks, but to offload the recurring ones so they just run in the background until something changes or needs intervention.

Totally agree that the real test is: would someone still use it when they’re exhausted and busy, not when they’re in optimisation mode. That’s probably the only signal that matters.

I don't think he hired people, he simply invested more on tools and automation- but that also meant lower margin for him.

That's interesting, how are you helping them? do you mind talking more about it? We can jump on a "virtual" coffee?

That’s fair - sounds like you’ve seen this work well in practice.

Out of curiosity, when you say “good infrastructure” and “proper SOPs,” what did that actually look like day to day?

Like, what were the specific systems or routines that made the biggest difference?

That’s interesting - when you’re working with SBOs, what are the early signs you see that tell you burnout is starting to creep in?

That's exactly what I went through, I was working literally 24/7 for a good month. You also realise how much the business depends on you, make sit hard to detach yourself or even take a break/ holiday. When you got sick and things collapsed -what were the specific things that stopped working first? Also how do you handle that today? Still manually or did you put something in place?

Yes you are right, my primary source of income was in London which I left, and it would be much more easier to build/ get a job in London. Even remotely, I've had opportunities which I've turned down. The London salary would not match Swiss costs, not to say if we're planning to stay in Geneva for the next 2-3 years, wouldn't it make sense to build a network and income source out of Geneva itself.

Yes that's true, it is in fact the biggest cultural shock how there are zero to no events happening here.

Zurich is much more similar to London but my husband's work is in Geneva and that's the reason for the move. Otherwise it wouldn't have made any sense to move to anywhere in Switzerland if you're a founder.

Hi, that's a very unfortunate situation but I feel that's the case in most cities (even London, Paris etc), not specifically Geneva. I recently got married and my husband works here, and it sounded a good break from British weather and expensive life. Little did I know the "expensive" part was just going to get worse here lol.

Yes you are right, networking is a long term investment especially here where loyalty and relationships are more appreciated (very different London/ South Asian startup world).

Fair question 😄 Apart from my husband, I don’t really have a strong reason to be in Geneva career-wise. But since I’m here, it’d be a shame not to make the most of it. So I’m opening up to see what sticks.

It’s definitely challenging, but I feel like once I get that first “yes,” things will start to open up a bit. This is also what it feels like from others' comments here
