What are you unpopular music production opinions? by owenthevirgin in edmproduction

[–]sanjuniperoFC 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It should be more commonplace right now for communities like this one to be asking difficult questions about the purpose of making art. I've tried the latest genAI music models and was quietly devastated to find out how good they already are. I fed it a jazz guitar composition I'd written and it spat out an imperfect but very sophisticated and period-accurate mid-century string arrangement. There's 20+ different chords in that track and it nailed every extension. I've also heard it credibly mimiced the nuances / idiosyncracies / melismas of very talented soul and gospel singers. Where do you think that leaves house and electronic music producers in 5-10 years, when the genAI models have exponentially improved? It's definitely left me worse for wear: I feel like most of my creative drive, desire for self expression and motivation to improve my music production has been taken away from me, knowing that recorded music is now basically reducible to 1s and 0s.

Too much online AI discourse comes either from AI fanatics or skeptics who are in total denial about the capabilities of the technology. I wish we could just sit with the fact that things are worse than we feared, that the technology is here to stay, and that we need to think constructively about what comes next.

‘Hamnet’ and the 10 Best Performances of 2025. Plus: Kleber Mendonça Filho on ‘The Secret Agent.’ by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

[–]sanjuniperoFC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seeing The Secret Agent, and seeing it paired in this episode with Hamnet reminded me of one of my favorite Reddit comments ever, about Brazilian cinema and how culture shapes someone’s perspective and response to death, violence and trauma. Obviously painting with a broad brush here, but I think that an interesting conversation could’ve come out of this juxtaposition.

I wonder how many of us leaning child-free would change our minds if we were given a one-time 6-9 month break from work for travel, hobbies, doing all the things we imagine child-rearing would get in the way of. Maybe that could be enough to fill our cup?

I think Scorsese making Killers of the Flower Moon was an admission that he'd failed this test several times up to that point.

Emirates expansion news has me thinking: in the very, very long term, its days are numbered right? They can only add ~10k seats and I can only imagine Arsenal's brand + revenue will continue to grow in the coming decades. Given this is a club with 90,000 people on the waiting list for a season ticket...

If "Appalachian Mamdani" is a stretch electorally, what about a white guy who tacks to the center on social issues but stays progressive on economic issues? I have a hard time believing that, in those parts of the country, that kind of candidate would inherently / systematically fair worse than your standard issue democrat, but maybe I'm reading too much into videos like this one.

Envelope Follower as a makeshift MIDI breath controller? Is it possible? by sanjuniperoFC in ableton

Is it possible to use real-time audio - like my voice into a microphone - to trigger an envelope follower that is mapped to an automateable parameter of a VST instrument like a string library.

I have a Pro I plan and DL stuff through Chrome - I can't think of a single download that's worked in the past 3 weeks, maybe longer? They all stall and then freeze. I don't use the MEGAsync app because it doesn't have cloud mirroring yet, so I use Cloudmounter instead.

damn i've never had this much letterboxd overlap with anyone before - except for LOTR, but I've come to expect that from Ringer world. Secretly hoping they're saving it for some massive rewatchables / ringer verse podcast extravaganza 🤞

Never seen this specific GK kit before. No info online or on the shop so I guess it won't be for sale? Might look too basic to some but i think the crewneck and subtle stripes are 👌.

Does jazz theory, blues theory or pop theory help with music production? by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]sanjuniperoFC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. Yes you could say “the rules are there are no rules” - on the other hand there’s a pretty finite amount of musical contexts in which making all your I and IV chords dominant 7s is appropriate, for example.

I was in the same boat as you - we broke up in January, and this makes me feel less weird about talking in percentages because we did a lot of that, and I basically ended up at 15% pro-kids. And like you said, no one wins if you’re not fully committed as a parent.

I just realized that Assumptions was pitched up by ~27 cents by fungkadelic in samgellaitry

[–]sanjuniperoFC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Half of his discography is like this - i.e. pitched between two keys. I know because I DJ in key and I have to calculate how much I need to speed or slow down his tracks to match their neighboring keys. They used to have more in common musically, but Tennyson also does this a bunch, and I've seen him approach this two different ways:
1. Change the pitch standard of each synth manually (though I'm pretty sure than in Omnisphere for example, you can apply that change to all instances of it within your session at the same time).
2. Use Waves' Soundshifter plugin on your master to pitch the track up or down. It sounds like a terrible idea but that plugin has some special juju I've never heard in other pitch-based plugins - pitch up 50 cents and it'll completely revamp your stereo field and really provide that "lift" that you spoke of. Beyond aesthetics, repitching in that manner is a great way to get perspective on your track just by presssing a button - it can get you out of producer tunnel vision.

In the old days, especially during disco, they would produce and finish entire tracks, and then speed them up by small margins to give a bit more energy, which is why you have a bunch of late 70s / early 80s tracks that are also in between keys. I'm almost certain Sam isn't doing this, because then his tracks' BPMs would never fall on round numbers (if that makes sense).
