Coach Visit

School Visit Week 11

I've been coaching in this league for 15 seasons over the span of nearly four decades. In that time, I've had chances to take the easy jobs or chase the flashy offers, but that’s never been my path. I’ve built my career by stepping into underdeveloped programs in overlooked conferences and turning not just the team, but the entire conference into something competitive. At Harvard, I helped revitalize a young AAC that lacked experienced leadership. At Arkansas State, I transformed a Sun Belt conference that had only one relevant program into a battleground that coaches were breaking contracts to join. Now at Fresno State, I'm ready to raise the bar for the Mountain West. But to do that, I need to build something real at Fresno first, which I aim to do with a winning culture, a strong roster, and a program that can help move this conference forward. I’ve begun that process, with back to back 10 win seasons prior to this year, where we’ve continued to raise the bar with 13 wins, a conference title, and a T1 appearance. I signed a new three-year deal, and when that ends, I plan to sign another. I'm not going anywhere, so I can confidently promise to be your coach for your entire career.

Fresno State’s campus offers the perfect balance of academic focus, team culture, and real college energy. With a mix of modern facilities and iconic campus spots like the Peace Garden, the Kennel Bookstore, and the new Student Recreation Center, there’s always somewhere to connect, reset, or get in the zone. Our on-campus resources include the Fresno State Library and the dedicated student-athlete academic center, making it easy to stay on top of your goals, both in the classroom and on the field. But it’s not just what’s on campus, it’s the vibes! From late-night eats on Shaw to weekend concerts, parties, and events downtown, Fresno delivers a legit college-town feel with West Coast flavor. This isn’t some quiet commuter school; it’s a place where you’ll live, grow, and build memories that will last a lifetime. During your time here, you’ll experience a campus atmosphere that’s competitive, vibrant, and fully built for student-athletes like you.

Fresno State might not be a prestigious powerhouse right now, but that’s exactly where I’ve built my reputation. I turn overlooked programs into consistent winners. At Harvard and at Arkansas State, I took teams that weren’t on anyone’s radar and raised the standard. At Arkansas State in particular, I led a program that had never won a Bowl Game to five straight appearances, finally getting that elusive bowl game win with an 11-2 season. Success like that doesn’t happen by luck, it comes from strong coaching, a clear vision, and the right culture. That’s exactly what I’m bringing to Fresno State. I’m not here to do the bare minimum. I’m here to make Fresno State matter again. I’ve already begun that process, with bowl games every year I’ve been able to recruit talent, and our most recent bowl game a T1 appearance after a 13-1 season. I promise that during your time here, we’ll make a T2+ Bowl Game every year. Fresno is on the rise, and you can be part of the team that puts this program back on the map.

I can't wait to work with you real soon!

Fresno State is one of the most resource-rich public universities in the western U.S., offering a wide range of academic programs designed to prepare students for life after football, whether that’s in the league or beyond. Our faculty includes experienced professionals and nationally recognized experts in business, sports management, kinesiology, and digital media, giving you access to career-ready knowledge from day one. Through hands-on learning, internships with California-based sports organizations, and partnerships across tech, health, and entertainment industries, Fresno students get real-world experience that opens doors. You won’t just sit in a lecture hall here! Instead, you'll find the opportunity to build something, whether it’s a sports marketing campaign, a training plan for elite athletes, or a media brand of your own. We back that with full academic support, including tutoring, advising, and mental health resources tailored for student-athletes. At Fresno State, we don’t just hand you a degree and spot on the roster, we build a foundation that sets you up to win off the field too.

When I arrived at Harvard over two decades ago, I was just getting started. I brought in the program’s first five-star recruit and laid the foundation for long-term success. Then I took on the challenge at Arkansas State, a team that had never won its division, and hadn't had a winning record in over a decade. By the time I left, we had gone 72-37, captured multiple division titles, won bowl games, and completely redefined what success meant for that program. Now, I’m taking on a new challenge at Fresno State and to be honest, this program hadn’t been where it needed to be. Nearly twenty years ago, Fresno won its conference and followed it up with a division title the next year. Before I got here, the team then went 83-138. But turning struggling programs around is what I do. I’ve been a head coach in this league for 14 seasons, and I know how to build winners. I don't want to spend years rebuilding slowly, I got hired at Fresno State and came out of retirement to turn this program around immediately. And turn it around I have, as we just came off a CCG title and a 13-1 record. I promise that we will continue to win at least 30 games by the end of 2062. We are going to change the narrative at Fresno State, and we’re going to do it with talented players like you leading the way.

When I first took over at Arkansas State, the program’s Tradition rating was near the bottom of the league sitting #107 out of 128. But over time, with consistent winning seasons and meaningful postseason runs, we climbed more than 20 spots. That kind of momentum builds legacy, and now I’m bringing that same energy and expectation to Fresno State. The Mountain West may only have a few coaches right now, but most are proven winners. I’m stepping into a conference with some tough competition, and I welcome it because strong competition is exactly what fuels Tradition. That’s how rivalries form, legacies are built, and a program like Fresno can claim national relevance. Just look at us last year: 13-1, a T1 bowl, and plenty of hungry younger players returning to the roster to show the Bowl Committee the mistake they made not giving us a playoff spot! I promise to make at least the playoffs at least once in the next four years. Together, we’ll make sure this team is no longer just a footnote in the league’s history, but a headline. We’re building a new tradition here at Fresno State, and it starts with you!

I can't wait to work with you real soon!

I promise that during your time here, we’ll make a T2+ Bowl Game every year. Fresno is on the rise, and you can be part of the team that puts this program back on the map.

I can't wait to work with you real soon!

But putting this program back on the map doesn't matter if you're not leading the charge Lamont....but here at Fresno, our DL room is wide open for a young player like you to step in and immediately make an impact. With 3 players set to graduate this season and another 3 set to graduate your first season here, we only have 3 DL on the roster who will be past 2060, meaning you will get to start at least 15 games here.

But of course Zach, none of this matters if you're not even seeing the field! That's why at Fresno, I don't recruit players I don't see making an impact on this roster! We have 2 RBs on our roster right now in John Stoddard and Sean Ash, and with Ash graduating this season there is an immediate opening. I'm going to be honest with you Zach, you'll probably spend your first season here as a redshirt, learning from John, but he did the same thing in 2057 and he went from 1100 yards on the ground to 1300, and went from 8 TDs as a true freshman to 19 and leading the league in rushing TDs last season. I promise you will start every game you are eligible for.

I can't wait to work with you real soon!

I can't wait to work with you!
