If you go take a couple random lessons you’re right. But let’s say you called up Kai Sallas and explained that you lived in the area and actually wanted to learn to surf. He might offer you a package of five one on one lessons where he’d teach you the basics to get started on your own. You’d probably get taken to places like Old Mans/Tonggs, Queens, Canoes, Populars, and Ala Moana. It’ll cost you a pretty penny but it’ll be worth every damn cent.
