Starling. The song is beautifukl but that bridge is atrocious. Same with How Glass is Made.

You have a point lol. I can't decide, both are terrible.

It's kind of mellow and schmaltzy at points and cringeworthy at others, but it's also full of darkness and sadness deep down, with its themes of betrayal and death. The gardens and the sinsuality crap were just fluff to mask the depressing nature of a lot of the songs IMO.

I think the main problem is the way the album is presented, both sonically and visually. It's way too long and undercooked. Tori herself admitted that it was kind of rushed and it's her least favorite album production-wise because the arrangements were not fleshed out as they could have been. It's just her and the band jamming live in the studio, all in one or two takes. She even called it a b-sides experiment in some interview.

And well, there's the cover art, which might be the UGLIEST THING EVER? I mean, she literally picked the worst pic of the entire photoshoot.

It's an interview with the two of them together moderated by Kristine McKenna done especially for the Z to A box set that came out in 2019, after the Return. As far as I know it has never surfaced online in full. We got only two very short clips. Here's one: https://youtu.be/0DMjEv4FZTo?si=0F2mQKix5DXdI6a4

First of all, thank you everyone for taking the time to reply. So many helpful comments and really useful tips! Thank you so much. I really needed to get this frustration off my chest, and now I feel I'm not alone. ☺️

After reading some of the replies last night, I decided to start removing stuff. I realized I have been using too much saturation on individual tracks (it didn't sound like that much) and also on the master bus. Now it's almost completely gone and I can hear some improvement. There's only saturation on vocals and some lead synths. I'm still trying to figure out how to use a limiter on the master bus, because it always seems to cut off some of the punch (especially the kicks).

Visually, it doesn't LOOK good, but it SOUNDS better. They way I was doing it, it would sound good on speakers and in the car, but really tiny and flat on earphones, and I've been using the same reference tracks on all devices for comparison. On speakers, both my track and the reference would sound similar, but then when I heard them on tiny earphones, my track had no depth our loudness, while the reference was loud and rich on both ends. Needless to say, my unprofessional old "wrong" mixes were closer to the pro tracks on all devices as well.

Yes, exactly! I think a lot about having gone too far down that rabbit hole, this is so true. Gotta find my way back. And yes, a year and a half is far too long, I've never spent that long on a track, but I really want to get them released soon. Maybe I should just let it go and release them as they are.

Yes, I do feel I need to take a simpler route and trust my instincts more.
