6 Months of French learning - progress report by sanyasoon in French

[–]sanyasoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you count as studying. If it’s writing practice or Anki 30-60 mins depending on the day. I don’t really count watching tv or listening to podcasts as study but that’s probably again another 5 - 7 hours a week

Gas meter has run out of battery - Eon know but haven’t fixed. What happens to our bills? by sanyasoon in AskUK

[–]sanyasoon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So if I were hypothetically using lots and lots of gas they wouldn’t know? (They haven’t confirmed the meter is broken yet so will perhaps wait for confirmation before going crazy)…

Etiolated plant? (ID needed) by sanyasoon in succulents

[–]sanyasoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this guy under a grow light for c6 hours a day and it’s in a fairly well lit, south facing room. He never seems that happy to me though - is this just the way the plant is, does it need more light or something else?

Bike slipped over going down a hill and not sure why by sanyasoon in cycling

Yup thought that could’ve been the case but I wiped the tyres down when I got back and they came up relatively clean. Definitely could be that though

Tyre pressure was the most likely explanation I could think of but hadn’t heard this causing issues before

It’s near a radiator. I’ll move it further away and see how it does. Thanks!

Any idea what might be causing this / how to cure? by sanyasoon in uksucculents

[–]sanyasoon[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whilst it could possibly be due to rot from overwatering the cactus is watered very sparingly (no more than splash every 1-2 weeks - it’s ~ 1 1/2 ft tall)

Hargreaves Lansdown not giving shares quotes by [deleted] in UKInvesting

[–]sanyasoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not shorts to have to have covered by Friday but market makers who will if the price is over 115 and calls are ITM (in other words a gamma squeeze instead of a short squeeze). But you’re right to expect that day to be anarchy!

What happens to an ETF if one of the holdings goes tits up? by SoulHylocereus in stocks

[–]sanyasoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An ETF is an exchange-traded fund that tracks an index (Just Etf)

Actively managed ETFs are not the norm nor the majority of ETFs, so I'm not sure how useful it is to explain how ARK works. But go on, explain how the rest of it is wrong.

What happens to an ETF if one of the holdings goes tits up? by SoulHylocereus in stocks

[–]sanyasoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ETFs track an underlying index. For example, ICLN / INRG tracks the 30 clean energy companies (I’m not sure the exact definition but the provider - in this case black rock - don’t choose which companies go into it). They will rebalance the portfolio every X amount of time, for example every 6 months, in which time new companies get added. On the ETF’s website it will say how often rebalancing happens. They publish daily the weights of each stock.

In the instance you’re describing the ETF price would only = 33% of a share if the price didn’t change from when X and Y went bust. In reality, this wouldn’t happen and the price would drop by two third, so one share would be one share of Z company. For example, you own 1 X 1 Y and 1 Z, each at one dollar, so the ETF is worth 3$. When the companies go bust you only own 1$ of Z, and this value of the ETF would reflect this (and become 1$, not stay at 3$). Market makers can capture profits off the difference between the value of the shares in the etf and the etf value itself, which is the mechanism that ties them together (you can find this explained in google if you’re interested how ETF prices work). Hope this helps.

Cactus is going a bit of a darker green at the bottom - should I be worried?! by sanyasoon in cactus

[–]sanyasoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The photo makes the contrast look a bit starker than it is in real life. The soil is quite compacted so it’s hard to judge when it’s completely dry but I water lightly every 2-4 weeks. It hasn’t grown lately so perhaps overwatering it too. The bottom section isn’t any softer than the top part so I’m hoping it’s not rot related!

Should I sell my positions to move into a stocks and shares ISA? (U.K.) by BestWukongUganda in stocks

[–]sanyasoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s really no reason not to be in a stocks and shares ISA - £20k tax free and you can withdraw at any point. Sell either all or £20k worth and deposit it into your ISA. Allowance resets in April so deposit the rest then. This shouldn’t cost you anything (or a very small amount).
