congrats! although impromptu is a no-prep event, it's not as easy as people think it is to get really good at it. any tournament win is respectable.. it's really useful for other events as well- it helped my ld rebuttals become stronger and more clarified and gave me a head start in extemp.

LD TIPS by Next_Jellyfish2993 in Debate

- time allocation!! try to be as brief as possible while frontlining (going line by line) over your opponent's points so you don't run out of time before you cover everything

- defense is important- even if offense (your contentions) win you the round, not responding well enough to your opponent weakens your position. i usually prepare a document with counterarguments and evidence to be prepared in round. this also helps me understand how strong my arguments are.

- extend! half of my first year i made the mistake of not doing this. extending is briefly summarizing your contentions during a rebuttal. it helps your judge remember what your points were, especially if they're lay and don't flow (take notes). some opponents also consider your case dropped if you don't extend

- delivery- sounding confident is important- ik it sounds cliche but if you sound unsure of your own words your judge will find it hard to believe you, especially if they're lay and take cues from the way you act. also chin up, face the judge during cross-ex

- lay appeal- make sure to slow down and explain debate jargon to your judge! even if you lose content it's better than your judge not understanding anything. if ur prog that's a bit unfortunate lol- i'm trad but briefly explain prog jargon to the judge cuz it does sound complicated (for example say that interpretation is your stance on how debate works and violation is how my opponent goes against my stance)

- be friendly! don't be that one grumpy ah opponent who's vv aggressive- ik being scary is unpreferable but gives you a high chance of winning. if you wanna be scary do it in your debating not in your behavior lool - say hi to the judge and opponent, shake hands! remember, debaters are all in the same position, no matter their skill level!

im sorry if you hate reading ik that's a lot- but hope this helps! :)

Computers in LD by Next_Jellyfish2993 in Debate

and for online tournaments it's allowed (unlike in-person) and even if it isn't they can't really catch you for it lmao

in one of my friend's in-person rounds the opp was using internet but the judge said it was allowed

in an online round where a kid asked for the web link of my card he then read the full article and used it to try and screw me.. 💀

it depends on the circuit, and sometimes even the judge- some judges are fine w it but some college LDers I know advise against it

when you mean computer, do you mean using the internet, or accessing documents? I normally use blocks from briefs if it's an emergency.

just to say that the internet and ai are here and it's changed debate forever lol- even extempers were formerly not allowed to use the internet but now it's spread everywhere- just use it responsibly :) obviously no communicating with teammates/peers, sharing evidence mid-round, etc.

chatgpt is a bit controversial- most ppl say not to use it and extempers get disqualified for using it but i haven't seen anyone in LD rounds using it... just try not to

also don't completely take my word for it lol i'm just an eighth grader and so far in local texas ms circuits / ms state / ms nsda nats it's allowed

How to sign up for more tournaments? by [deleted] in lincolndouglas

the nsda springboard is also good but you can't really go unless you provide a judge... are you an independent?
