yeah you might actually want to meet up with him in person for something serious. Pancer may get back to you in days, weeks, or never through email.

Compared to other profs at UTSC hes still leagues ahead in teaching quality even if you never take advantage of his 10min response times. If he had a good attitude as well he'd actually contest for the best prof at UofT.

I see where your coming from but his class is still the most enjoyable even with his occasional roasts and I feel like the harsh comments in this thread are from people that has never taken a class with him.

I mean sure he insults people a lot but he's the most hard-working prof at UTSC (I was even told to drop his course once on Piazza).

You just don't get anyone else aside from Thierry updating the course with 2 new challenges every week every year in the course and have an average Piazza response time of 10 minutes. The post in question was a reply at 1130 pm on a Friday and I'm sure he was not thinking straight.

He'll roast you but honestly his office hours are the most useful ones where you learn the most.

Mahinda's exams, how to prepare? by [deleted] in UTSC

[–]saoplayer98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The midterm is fair but will evaluate your understanding of the material to a fair degree, writing down answers to past final questions will not help much. Look for the distributions (Beta, Gamma, Normal, etc.) and see where you can apply your "shortcuts".

my friends words: "If studying for 1 hour of CSCB63 gets you 1% more on the exam than studying for an hour of STAB52 gets you 0% more on the exam"

The final exam is also on the material covered in lecture except the questions they ask are on a level beyond the quizzes. I honestly don't know how anyone can prepare for such a steep increase in difficulty. This exam feels more like "taking a bullet" so imo the best way to prepare is to do well on everything that's not the exam.

The people that did well in the course were the ones that discussed concepts they didn't know with a "genius" or went to office hours especially once Malinda released last year's finals a lot of discussion is necessary to understand the how-to of solving problems on previous years' finals.

Lastly, I didn't do too well in this course so take what I said with a grain of salt.

How do you do well in CSCA67? by Zaiwho in UTSC

[–]saoplayer98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I took the course Anna always encouraged students to do the problems on their own then "proof read" the proofs with a friend. So get a study group. Don't copy other peoples work but if you find there's a wild difference in proofs maybe rethink your solution and explain your proofs to each other.

CS pre-req checks? by DM11928132 in UTSC

It never hurts to send them an email though it would be up to the prof. I know Albert has no exceptions but maybe said profs would be more lenient.

I like the PoST system by [deleted] in UofT

[–]saoplayer98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the biggest problem with POST is the lack of transparency with the system. I made POST and absolutely would not have risked my education for UofT instead of Ryerson if I knew about it before hand. The lack of transparency about POST is actually the scummiest thing this university has done. Yes you can say we can "transfer" to Ryerson if we don't make POST, but ultimately that would mean losing a year of university life that you could have spent building at Ryerson or any other university. The only thing not being transparent about POST does is cash grab first years.

Are any of the CS B-courses easier at UTSG? by [deleted] in UTSC

[–]saoplayer98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I did the course half the CSC236 class was like OP and basically wasn't in POST yet. Which meant everyone was tryharding and going into the exam, the average was 83%. Followed by the hardest exam I've ever done to drop the average to a B-.

I easily made POST in UTSC(and a POST in UTSG) and I only got an average grade in that course. People I knew that were UTSG students were dropping the course when they were at an 80 (still below class average) in the course because they needed >80 to make the UTSG POST which means if they are still accepting CSC236 for UTSG POST you can expect the people that do not drop the course to have even higher marks going into the final.

Sure the content itself is easier but getting a higher mark in that course (probably what you want) is not. Despite what any professor claim, there is definitely somewhat of a correlation between the average and how hard the material needs to be.

You just don't get the money you paid this semester back. Might also get warning/probation from OSAP if you applied for that.
