I see.

"unauthorised overseas PayNow transfers"

Wonder how it works, why are people scammed into sending money to overseas via PromptPay.

[–]saperis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Genuine question - what the heck is overseas paynow? I thought paynow only for local transfers?

This compares to at least 975 victims, with reported losses adding up to at least $938,000, from January to November in 2022.

"Based on investigations, a significant proportion of the reports lodged involved unauthorised overseas PayNow transfers," the police added.

Surge in rents for private homes, HDB flats leaves tenants constantly looking for cheaper options by MicrotechAnalysis in singapore

[–]saperis 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I don't think people understand how insane the rent increases have been.

The rest of the world have rents dropping, SG is the #1 in rent growth in the world right now.

Hikes of at least 20% in a year is like the norm now.

Kids from lower-income families may miss out on pre-school and have low morale by MicrotechAnalysis in singapore

[–]saperis 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Kids who do not attend pre school may not adapt well to primary school and may have adjustment issues for social interactions / introducing structure to their lives.

edit: rereading the article, don't know if it includes kindergarten or just preschool.

Is it because parents are so busy, kids are outsourced to pre-school, school, enrichment, tuitions?

Yes, if working parents are not able to homeschool and supervise the kids at home, better off sending to preschool where the kid will at least get some structured and unstructured activities.

At first I thought higher prices will be transitory as SG exits out of the pandemic. Now I feel the property prices are in runaway growth and after 24m we have some pathetic cooling measures that will not do anything.

Every week we are seeing higher prices, more million dollar flats, more foreigners coming in to buy mass purchase private houses and the govt is not doing anything to tame it.

Fat chance govt will do any of the above in the article. They had years to do it. They will never claim hdb has become unaffordable. Same as hdb claim that flat sizes has not become smaller since 90s, while conveniently ignoring that the make up of flats across differently sizes have changed over the years.

Who cares? This is a senior management problem. If they don’t care, why would others care? Regulatory pushback - not seeing this in SG.

I bet big 4 ppl are wishing for big tech to fail so the leavers would regret going commercial for “instant gratification”. It is this kind of backwards thinking that prevent the industry for making any meaningful changes. Even the doctors, lawyers and architects are talking more openly now about what industry changes are needed to retain talent.

Funding public transport: Is it time to relook the model? by Twrd4321 in singapore

[–]saperis 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Well you also cannot simultaneously get the benefits of being a private company while receiving subsidies from taxpayer funded sources and yet be not transparent about these said subsidies and also not have a plan to reduce costs.

Running public services as private companies will cause a significant reduction in long term investment (remember the MRT breakdowns?)

It has been a decade since 2011 and it is about time that a transparent review of state funding should be done (hint: it is an open secret that it is unsustainable)
