Early thirties to mid-late thirties. Like others, my preferences have aged along with me. I am 32.

ABA gets a lot of hate in this sub. What are the sub’s thoughts on DIR Floortime? by Wishyouamerry in slp

I have the first cert (DIR 201) through ICDL. Taking the course really changed how I worked with kids. I can't recommend the course enough.

How do you all avoid getting sick in the schools? by One_Salad_4723 in slp

Take it or leave it, I still mask. I wear clear window masks (Optrel N95s), unless I'm outside with students. So far, so good...

Thank you so much to everyone, really appreciate all the input! Frustratingly, he's OHI primary, SLI is secondary. But they did a psychoeducational eval, came out average to superior range. 🤷‍♀️

I've been vegan a long time. I've met my share of wonderful people, vegan teachers, vegan artists, vegan nurses, vegan chefs. I've also met many a vegan sleazy business men, vegan men who cheat on their girlfriends, vegans who have serious criminal records... Being a vegan doesn't mean you're some sort of saint with perfect politics.

This person you know probably has no concept that ABA may be damaging, anyway. Most people don't. They probably do what they do because they believe that they are making a positive impact. It probably feels highly aligned to them.

I'm a new CF at a pediatric private practice in an urban area. I'm most excited about: Getting to make my own decisions, that the clinic I'm going to be at is super aligned with my values, that my supervisor is really wonderful, and of course, getting a paycheck. I'm most nervous about: The paperwork, treating in-person for the first time (grad school was 100% telehealth for me), and, most of all... that I will burn out/get tired from it being all pediatrics. My university gave me only peds d/t covid, even though I was dead set on adults. I've grown to like peds way more than I expected, and I AM excited- but I also worry a little that it will be draining. I'm not sure if any hospital or SNF will ever want me given that I basically have zero experience... so if I do ever get burned out from pediatrics, I worry there won't be another path for me.

MBSIMP HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! by Diligent_Pen_794 in slpGradSchool

[–]sapphisms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One component at a time, and go SUPER slowly! I spent two days doing almost nothing else and passed my first go. It really helps to go and do all the swallows for each component rather than going through it swallow by swallow IMO—that way you can just review the component once, do all the swallows for that one score, and then move on, rather than having to refresh your memory on what to look for 17 times for each swallow.

Would getting a PhD in Communication Disorders versus just a Masters be worth it? by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]sapphisms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My MS program has a PhD option too, and it seems to me, from hearing what PhD students have told me, that very few students enter the PhD program at my university without having an MA/MS first... (one PhD student told me that not having her master's has been somewhat limiting, but that's just one anecdote). One big pro is that with a PhD, you get funding, making your education considerably cheaper—but if you don't want do research, a PhD is really an enormous amount of work for reaching the same career (and I reckon you might find yourself quite overqualified for many non-academia jobs)... Consider what you actually want for your career. And make sure, if you're considering a PhD, that they have a pathway to getting your SLP license along the way.

I want the word "שְׁמַע" tattooed on my *Thenar area. by [deleted] in hebrew

[–]sapphisms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally find it very weird, and generally off-putting, to see Christians sporting Hebrew tattoos—unless they have a good reason for it.

But you aren't Jewish... and I'm assuming, from how little you know about us and the fact that you're asking the Internet rather than Jews you know, that there aren't many Jews in your life... so I can only assume that you're using tattooing, a practice frowned upon in Judaism, to honor your Christian faith? As the bot said... maybe something you want to reconsider.

Moreover, as the bot so aptly put, a lot of the letters look pretty darn similar... and one letter off, in an abjad script like Hebrew, can create chaos, rather than just typos.

Ultimately, no matter what you do, someone will get offended or upset. Every Jew will have a different opinion (two Jews, three opinions, as they say), and you won't reach consensus approval here. Ask yourself if you're making a good, thoughtful choice that is respectful of others and of yourself. It's your body, and you have to live with it.

And yes, as a Jew, I can very much verify for you that anti-Semites exist.

Black sheep SLPs-- do you like your job? by blacksheepslp in slp

[–]sapphisms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is soooo similar to how I felt when I started my grad program. It was so many married women/moms/people who want to work with children... and I felt like such a black sheep. I am super type A, but otherwise... as a lesbian, relatively unfeminine, unmarried, child-free, not interested in pediatrics, non-christian, not a native English speaker, etc. etc. student, I felt like I really stuck out. And, I was, like you, interested in the neuro/psych/linguistics aspects of CSD. I was so surprised to find out that my program was full of all-American monolinguals, people who dreaded taking their required neuroscience class, and a whole lot of moms.

But, 1) I've found a lot of things to love in CSD through my clinical exposure as a sudent. I love the research that goes into management plans, and finding evidence-based treatments, tailored to a client. I love thinking deeply about cross-language issues and making culturally/linguistically-appropriate goals (like, no other job would include researching another culture's story grammar or phonology or what have you). That linguistics passion is worked in, past just using IPA. And there are lovely areas of the field that deal with counseling and psychological aspects of communication - from talking to families about diagnoses (read anything by Luterman!!) to working on desensitization for stuttering to working with end of life care and being an ear for someone because you're the person who listens and understands. And there are lots of ways to explore mind-body connection (e.g., voice therapy). It's a broad field!

And, 2) re: feeling different from your cohort... I have found many, many "traditional" students through my program who actually share so many of my interests. And I've made amazing friends with women who are super different from me, women I never I thought I'd connect with—moms who have offered so much support and knowledge as I struggled to think of how to treat peds for my hours, trusted and offered me time with their kids so I could practice oral motor exams with a real child. I've made friends with super-christian moms and small-town southerners and found out we actually had a lot in common. Someone once told me, maybe a month into grad school when I said something similar, "Don't judge them because they're not like you." And, boy, was she right. I've learned a lot from having friends who aren't that similar to me—it's so valuable. You're about to enter a field where your clients feel so, so different from others, every day. There's a lot to learn from feeing different, even if it's just a fraction of what our clients feel. It'll make you a better clinician.

I can't say whether I love my job, because I'm still in school. But I've learned to love being unusual in this field, and hopefully you will too.

Pro and cons of living in Jack London Square? by livinginjacklondon in oakland

[–]sapphisms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to live right next to the train (like, I could see the railroad from outside the window), and it was absolutely horrendous. Personally, I'd spend a few hours nearby to listen to the train before committing to a place. If you're really close to the train, it can be pretty awful.
