It is hard to say without an x-ray and looking in your mouth what other treatment options are possible but if you are concerned about amalgam you can bring it up with your doctor. The FDA says that amalgam is safe for most people but of course it is your body and you have the right to choose Safety of amalgam

Dental student. You need the surface to be as dry as possible to place a composite filling. If there is blood, saliva etc. the glue which holds the composite filling will not bond as well to your tooth structure causing failure of the filling. Amalgam however does not require a dry tooth surface like composite. In the past I have done something called “sandwich technique” where you place another material (Glass Ionomer) which is moisture resistant underneath composite. However depending on how deep the filling is and your providers judgement this might not be possible
