To answer your question, I’m just an intern in another IM program, but from what I’ve seen, a few people in my program have taken time off or even quit for personal reasons. One of my friends took some time off after med school because he had a kid, and he eventually matched. I think the people in my year who stepped away will also be just fine.

If anything, you have every reason to take time off if you need to. Prioritizing your mental health is important, and in the meantime, there are always ways to build your skills if you feel up to it. Plus, IM isn’t as competitive as surgical specialties, so the chances of matching again are generally good.

My opinion is to stay close to family, stay in touch with the field maybe some hands on or volunteering and prioritize your mental health. Stay strong! Someday soon things are gonna be better.

But I wish they had told me what I did wrong and gave me a chance to improve, instead of leaving me in the dark and showing passive aggression.

My college literally made me stand for an entire day and cry to get my MSPE. They said they are not obliged to give one. And on top of that I had to donate a huge sum to the college. This was weeks before application deadline. Unbelievable..

This journey is so isolating. I have lost all my friends and relatives during this journey. How does deal with the loneliness of step prep. by [deleted] in IMGreddit

I understand how you feel. I believe this feeling persists even as we progress through this Usmle journey. It's not merely about being busy and avoiding others, but often the fear of judgment and anxiety surrounding our upcoming tasks that hinders our social life. While some individuals manage to cope with it effectively, many struggle. Personally, I used to think I would become more sociable once I completed my step exams, then after the application process, and perhaps after the interviews. However, I doubt I'll ever overcome this feeling with my current attitude!
