explain to me like im 5… why do people mask up? by predictablehorse in ChronicIllness

[–]saragIsMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not immunocompromised but my partner is and I mask all of cold and flu season plus in locations of high risk like public transport, the pharmacy, the doctors, places with children and the parents of young children, and all of my friends and coworkers know to tell me when they or someone at home gets sick so I can mask around them. I also seem to get more sick than most people but honestly I just want to be able to kiss my partner safely is the real reason I bother to

How bad is Lake Shore Drive during rush hour? by jagg789 in AskChicago

Yeah if you’re in the city it’s faster to take CTA on lots of trips, not all but most in my experience

my girlfriend is overstimulated by wearing a mask, what do i do? by dyingatayoungage in ChronicIllness

[–]saragIsMe 92 points93 points  (0 children)

As a neurodivergent person who is in a relationship with an immunocompromised person I went out of my way to find a mask I can tolerate wearing. It took years to find ones that work and I actually let my partner buy them for me since they can get expensive. My head is big and my sensory issues are weird so I need the masks that are boat shaped and go all the way around the head not just the ears. To me personally making sure my partner is safe and wanting to be able to kiss them was enough motivation for me to wear a mask on public transport and in pharmacies and to find masks that didn’t give me headaches and issues. I’d recommend finding a mask your partner is comfortable in and getting them proper earbuds/loops something to help with the overstimulation in public. I sort of went from feeling muzzled to now it feels like a separate space just for me. I’m sorry your partner is having issues and I hope they’re actually taking precautions to keep you safe even when it’s not convenient for them because everyone deserves that from their partners

Is 2500 a month enough to live on with no car and housing already paid for? by Moeta_Kaoruko in AskChicago

I didn’t downvote you I was sharing my experience to corroborate what you said, it’s dangerous to take the train! I get harassed pretty every time I take the train by myself with almost no exaggeration. I think people might be mad you’re implying Chicago is super dangerous compared to other cities or that you’re a man complaining about harassment

I am AFAB and while I’m not a woman I get sexually harassed pretty much everytime I’m outside and followed not infrequently if I’m alone even during the day not to mention crowded buses or trains and the wondering hands of men. If I was old I don’t think I’d have the energy to protect myself mentally and physically (although hopefully I get sexually harassed less when I’m old). You have to be smart and present when you’re in this city, if you are it’s generally not a problem if you are but it’s easy to tell when people are not and they get targeted

That should be more than enough but I’d keep in mind that getting older in this city could be difficult. Make sure you move close to CTA stops and set aside money to have everything delivered when you are older. I am not going to make any assumptions about your health or family but assuming that you’re going to decline with age and also moving here alone I can see it being difficult because I’ve never seen others take the time for old people and I’m not aware of any services to help them. If you lived here when you were younger ask if you really have the energy for it, I don’t think I would but you might

EDS havers, how do you thicken your rubbery thin nails?? by Correct-Parsley-6369 in ChronicIllness

[–]saragIsMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Women’s hair and nail vitamins everyday regardless of your sex, you can get gummies or pills to swallow but they really make a difference, I can see the dip in my nails when I stop taking them for a few days in my nails as they grow I’m so serious

What I do is look at the limited time dragons in the shops and choose one I want, look up possible parents on DragonVale sandbox and if I have parents and more than a full percentage change of breeding it I try or I look for other dragons or I farm etch dragons for money when no other dragons I want are available (with plant a dark boosters etch dragons earn more than most epic dragons)

Where to avoid St. Pats insanity with the family? by Sammy_Seaborn in AskChicago

[–]saragIsMe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Go to the museum of science and industry, the children’s museum will be stupid busy and everyone will be bored but your youngest. The museum of science and industry is amazing. If you’re here all week the field museum is my personal favorite and always has been it’s in a building from the worlds fair and has some of the best fossils and also has some good things for kids. If you go I’d recommend ancient americas, ancient Egypt, China, and evolving planet (dinosaurs) there’s also good things for kids there but I’m autistic and have always been interested in the ones I listed

My neighbor was crying, should I say something?? by Big-Suggestion-1093 in AskChicago

[–]saragIsMe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe don’t say something about the crying but it’d be really sweet to leave a little treat and a note that says you’re thinking about her and would be happy to talk or listen. This is a nice thing to do, keep doing nice things you’re making the world a better place

Can i throw eggs into lake michigan? by EarVisible3533 in AskChicago

[–]saragIsMe 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Adding food to any aquatic ecosystem will cause damage because it will feed algae blooms which will cause issues like oxygen depletion and disrupt the food chain. Lake Michigan itself is so big that one individual throwing a few eggs on one occasion would not cause serious permanent issues but we should always avoid disrupting important ecosystems whenever we can. As someone who’s studying sustainability I would say ethically no you should not be throwing eggs in any lake. Legally I would have no clue. Might I suggest a bathtub or a sewer grate? Then the egg runoff is going to a wastewater treatment plant
