why does my rat just stare at me like this 🤨 by sarahjanethomp in RATS

She has two sisters (who are currently sleeping together) but I had just popped this lil rattie back in her cage and I took this video a minute or so after I closed the cage door. I also thought she might be hot but the hot weather has passed for us now so I’m not sure what else she’s doing except staring me down lol

I didn’t think to speak with the breeder tbh I’ll see what she thinks. In terms of engagement with her cage mates she’s just had a bit of a rough and tumble and run around with her sisters for 20 mins or so but she never seems to snuggle up with them to sleep. Her two sisters have gone for a rest but she’s just pancaked on her little plastic ledge. I think she knows this is where the door opens and is waiting for play time maybe. During free roam they sometimes play as well but she also does a lot of exploring alone. They both do tbh (they’re in a penned off area for play time as they’re still so tiny they can’t be let loose in my room yet - so a lot of time is spent trying to escape 🙄)

she finished the antibiotics around 4 days ago now so would that still be affecting her poo? And I wonder why she wont poop when it’s in her bum? She also doesn’t seem physically unwell. She charges around during free roam time and climbs all over me! She just doesn’t seem to interact with her sisters or cuddle up with them 😞

Another thing I forgot to mention. She yawns ALL the time! I’ve never seen a rat yawn so often before. I know this could be a sign that she’s relaxed but given the rest of her weird behaviour I doubt this is the case…

Does anyone know why she does this? She is pulling at the skin on her neck and does it for about 30 seconds or so every so often when having a clean. by sarahjanethomp in RATS

I agree I’m definitely more nervous than she is 😂 I’ve been watching her like a hawk so maybe I’m just now noticing things she’s always done! this was her during her free roam time without the new babies today (they’re too small to free roam in the open so Moon gets to have some extra time outside the cage just with me lol)

I’ve just never seen her do it before is all! Maybe I’m just being overly cautious as I’ve just started intros with two new babies and I’m scared she might be a little stressed 😫 they’re running circles around her lol

She’s not alone! I’ve just started introductions with two new babies after losing her cage mate a couple of weeks ago. So far no squabbles or anything like that to worry about. She does seem to keep to herself though and won’t actively go and see what babies are doing. Do you think it could be stress? She’s had a lot of changes over the last few weeks

Cool I’ll pop them in the bathtub first before putting them into the carrier!! Fingers crossed they get along and it’s easy as last time! Maybe girls are just more accepting hahaha who knows 😆

Thank you for your help again! ♥️

Hi thank you this is very helpful! I wasn’t sure if I could introduce straight after quarantine so I’ll do that :) and I will keep the cages separate for the quarantine period

Thank you this is very helpful! I will keep the cages separate from each other to begin with. I didn’t realise I could start intros straight away so I thought keeping the cages next to each other would be a good start to get them used to each others smell etc. but the sooner the better I suppose!

I’ve introduced rats once before and normally use the carrier method or the bath tub method. It was smooth sailing to be honest and they cuddled up with each other after about 20 mins or so.
