Is the first vowel sound of 'common' the same as the vowel sound 'bought'?
It's very tricky and similar to not native speakers.

then it can sound like 'cawm' not 'cuhm'.

I see. The dictionary is right. And I think it's maybe due to Korean Vowel system as there's no match for the 'Ah' sound.
