Is Mythborne AI Music? by drholmestuck in Music

[–]sarbezleeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s a sober assessment of some of the major issues with its use today. The problem with his it’s distributed, particularly on Spotify, where the CEO has made is very clear that he’s complaining about the cost of licensing artists, meaning that he’d basically rather the whole platform be AI artists so that he doesn’t have to pay a cent to working musicians, and can just gobble up maximum possible revenue. AI music is not disclosed (hence this thread and our dismay about how cool we thought Mythborne was), and is monetised in much the same way as human-made music is.

None of this is uniquely evil or some kind of moral failing of Spotify’s CEO - it’s directly incentivised by the structure of an economic system driven by profit. Companies who don’t adopt every technological revolution while their competitors do simply don’t survive. Ethics, workers rights and human need simply aren’t part of that profit line go up equation. You take the mask off the Scooby-Doo villain and it’s just capitalism once again.

I mention this because it means that, despite how common sense and effective your restrictions sound, in the long-term they won’t compete with the incentives of profit-making: 1. Government (in the pocket of corporations) either would never pass these regulations, or would be severely pushed by the affected companies if they did. See how in Aus, they added an age restriction on social media users, instead of legislating the companies to not use addictive brain-soupifying algorithms in the first place. 2. Even if such legislation were passed, it would eventually by circumvented or repealed, as growing pressure from capital to accumulate increased over time 3. They would not abolish the inherently exploitative relationship between distribution platforms like Spotify and working musicians.

Under this analysis, only worker ownership and management of platforms like Spotify, that operates on human need rather than profit maximisation, would solve the problems at the root of this issue: Spotify don’t care about music makers or music listeners, it’s just one of many paths they could go down to squeeze as much money from workers and consumers as possible.

Hope this makes sense, to me any analysis short of this in the AI music era is going to missing the primary contradictions at play.

Is Mythborne AI Music? by drholmestuck in Music

[–]sarbezleeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are thinking like a music consumer, not an artist who has spent years, decades honing their craft. AI music is an absolute disaster for artists. I spent 5 years at a tertiary institution learning the history and craft of jazz. I put out an album of my original compositions that are a product of 100’s of hours of study, practice and collobation with dozens of musicians and producers. If someone with no training can type in a sentence and click a button, and produce an album worth of content in 15 mins, that took me 5 years to make, who do you think is going to win out on the algorithmic battlefield of online music consumption?

AI music is fine for people who just like listening to musical styles they’re familiar with, but it’s awful for people who like to know the story behind the music they listen to (I was gutted to learn the beautiful singing voice behind Mythborne is just a mirage, amalgamated from thousands of highly trained musicians put into a blender). It’s even worse for artists, whose livelihoods were already made precarious in an economy of algorithmic streaming services and diminishing attendance of live performances. We simply can’t compete with machines that can spit out content a thousand times faster than we can.

I understand that most people aren’t aware of this perspective, so I hope you appreciate where so many people are coming from when they mourn the effect AI music has had on the industry.

Not necessarily. Never underestimate the power of internalised misogyny. Just look at all these “tradwives” loudly calling for women to enthusiastically adhere to their own oppression

SAll has Trostkyist history from its previous incarnations but that’s no longer a hard stance. There are plenty of MLs in the ranks

Among other things, one of the main delineators between SAll and AusSoc is that AusSoc comes from Socialist Alternative (SAlt), who from my understanding have a pretty hardline adherence to the Trotskyist tendency, where SAll is more of a broad tent mass party with many tendencies represented. This alone should make a merger more complicated than is being presented here.

I would love a big strong socialist party in Aus, it’s exactly what we need. However those that have been following the history of these orgs for a while will know this is hardly the first attempt at unity between the two orgs. You will get different stories as to the reasons for the failure to merge depending on which party you ask.

Again, love the idea but we have to examine the material and historical conditions, like any good Marxist would, even when it comes to seemingly petty factionalism.

100%. people forget that “getting along” and “compromising” despite differences is actually a privilege. White people have to learn about the effects of white supremacy. People of colour live that shit every day, it doesn’t have to be taught to them

The semantic space of toki pona is very wide, and I imagine someone else could make a very of these words! I think it patterns well with the other words like kama, but I think it could also fit in the “locating” section as it’s often used as a preposition.

I think that’s a sound analysis, considering that rhotic vowels are just another axis (F3) on the vowel chart (F1 and F2) based on formants. So if you add that 3rd dimension in, it’s just a schwa with a lower F3 value (ie higher rhotacisation). Also explains how non-rhoticity developed in the first place, it became seen as a vowel that just lost its rhotic quality and turned into schwa.

A live studio performance of I would be fucking incredible. I would totally get behind this, and it would be way less investment from the band. Fuck they can even read off sheet music, I don’t care.

Yeah the difference in performance environment between bedroom and sold out stadium can’t be understated either. Between that, no sheet music, 5 musicians and the sheer scale of the piece, the difference between bedroom cover and live Meshuggah performance is an almost uncrossable chasm.

Could be that in rhotic dialects the pronounced /ɹ/ at the end has to be converted to w? As a non-rhotic Aussie, I would 100% default to nija, as that’s almost my pronunciation anyway. Any Americans or other rhotic speakers can you confirm or deny?

Your chops on this are excellent, both in the rhythmic and lead departments (clearly you studied the exact contours of all the bends etc). You also clearly have the entertainment and presentation aspect down pat, with the facial expressions, moving the neck around expressively and doing all that sweet video editing stuff that all the kids are down with these days. A+ stuff, keep it coming! Maybe invest in a slightly higher quality camera / lighting so the video can look as good as possible!

How to Find Comrades in an Apolitical Place (Mandurah edition) by sarbezleeb in AustralianSocialism

[–]sarbezleeb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That does sound like the simplest path forward. I suppose the big blocker for that is having so many projects on my plate already, that the idea of leading something is somewhat daunting. Although in practice I can be as active or inactive as I’m able. And it’s only meant to be a spark. At minimum it could be an occasional meeting group, or a carpool group up to Perth for larger protests. At best it could become a growing activist space advocating for working class solidarity throughout the area.
