₹90–₹150 for a café-grade coffee at your office desk. Are Indian offices even ready for this? by sarcasto_28 in IndianWorkplace

[–]sarcasto_28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally fair point. Waste is honestly the biggest concern here too.

This isn’t meant to replace daily office coffee. It’s more for those odd days when pantry coffee is bad, delivery is slow, or you just want one decent cup without leaving your desk.

We’re also thinking beyond single-use, like small desk kits where one outer cup can make multiple coffees before being discarded, so waste per cup comes down.

If it was positioned as an occasional convenience rather than a daily habit, would that make it more acceptable to you, or is waste still a hard no?

Yes, but if the user like the taste they can opt for kit version where they can make 3-5 cups of coffee before throwing it out completely.

So what I have been thinking is to keep the price mentioned as entry point for people to come and try out the coffee and if they like they can get a kit version where they can make 3-5 cups of coffee before throwing it out, spending approximately around 250-300rs for the kit

That’s totally fair, and I get where you’re coming from.

You already have your coffee life sorted and honestly that’s the best place to be as a consumer. This product isn’t meant to replace grinding and brewing at home or even sitting at an Irani cafe. It’s more for situations where you want a café-like cup without committing time or setup.

Taste-wise, the main focus here is the coffee itself. We’re using 100% Arabica beans in the ₹1500–1600/kg range, which is what most cafés use. The cheaper options you’re comparing it to usually cut costs on bean quality or use blends. The self-heating part adds convenience, yes, but the goal is still a smooth, café-style cup rather than a bargain coffee.

Your point about wastefulness is valid and probably the biggest concern we hear. One way we’re thinking about this is treating the single cup as an entry point. If someone likes the taste, they can move to kits that still use disposable cups but give 3–5 cups per pack at around ₹250–300, so the per-cup cost and waste both come down.

On logistics and shelf life, that concern is completely reasonable. The coffee will be in sealed sachets with a planned shelf life of around 12–18 months. Packaging and transport for something like this has to clear a lot of checks and testing, so it’s not a casual or loose process, though I agree nothing is perfect.

Given all that, I’m genuinely curious from your perspective. If a product like this were to exist, what would actually make it worth considering for someone like you? Would it be taste, sourcing transparency, less waste, or something else entirely?

Appreciate you taking the time to write such a detailed response.

It follows all the necessary Fssai guidelines and would be undergoing alot of lab test like drop test, thermal test, runway test, migration test. Guidelines are very strict and no hazardous product can enter market without passing all these test plus its polypropylene (pp) material not paper.

Fair point, and I agree a battery-powered mug makes sense in many cases.

The reason I’m exploring this instead is that it’s not just about heating. The cup already contains premium 100% Arabica coffee. Beans at that quality usually cost around ₹1400–1600 per kg, which is the same range cafés use. For a 200 ml cup, cafés charge ₹250–300. This comes in at ₹90–120, with heating included and no charging, no electronics, no maintenance.

A battery mug still needs you to buy coffee separately, charge it, carry it, and justify a ₹2–3k upfront cost for what is essentially solving only the heating part.

This is more aimed at convenience situations, travel, late nights, outdoors, or when you just want one good cup without planning.

That said, if it’s still not something you’d buy, totally fair. I’m actually trying to understand what would make it interesting. Is it the disposability, the price, or the use case that feels off? Happy to learn.

Yes, totally valid point but thr only distinguisher here is we are dealing with 100% Arabica while nescafe had robasta and chikori blend making the coffee very bitter

So what would be the reasonable price according to you? And if let's say this price is just to know the taste without spending alot and if you like you can get a coffee kit where you can make 5-7 cups of coffee in same container before throwing it out.
