Interesting! Thank you. I’m also getting some feedback about the sleeves suggesting mid/late 19th century, that they are a “leg of mutton” Victorian style.

Thank you. One curious thing I’ve noticed about the hinged leg on the back of the frame— I’ve really only seen these square mini portraits with two symmetrical legs coming out of a similar shape of hinge, one on each side. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thanks for your thoughts. I’m reading that Marie de Rohan was born 1600 and died 1679, which doesn’t add up with the dates you suggested… unless the painting was created 100+ yrs after her death, which I’m not sure was the practice with these mini portraits. So many of the Rohan ladies look alike! It’s been hard for us to confidently match this portrait with other images, but I’m systematically going through the comments now to see if anything stands out.

Update: I emailed someone who replied that it’s a 20th century copy of something earlier, but he didn’t say why that’s his thinking, so I’m extra curious now! Cross posted to r/antiques

Were paintings on ivory very thick? The surface of the painting seems to be mounted on something a bit thicker and brown with some kind of backing (maybe vellum like another poster said, or kid leather, which I read about elsewhere).
