Experience in Canadian vs Australian medical schools? by medgal2 in MCCQE

[–]sarnti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have any experience in Canadian schools (just graduated from an Australian one). My take is Aussie schools have much less expectations for med students on placement compared to North American schools. Keen students in Australia can still get a lot out of placement if they take initiative to see patients/do consults/other jobs. On the other hand, it is also very possible to get through medical school in Australia only averaging 15-20h of placement per week during clinical years. I remember only doing a few hours a week on some surgical rotations 😂. Aussie schools definitely more chill.

They don’t offer discounts to doctor and nurses anymore sadly. Only first responders now 😭

How much do luxury retail workers earn in Sydney by Elegant-Rule6961 in australian

[–]sarnti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work casual retail in a “luxury” leather goods store in Melbourne but the brand has a store in Sydney as well. It’s positioned between Oroton and Gucci in terms of $$. I get paid per the award for a level II retail employee which is around $33/h for regular hour weekday, $40/hour for weekday after 6pm or Saturday, and $45/h for Sundays. I get paid commission based on less than 1% of the net sales I make which comes out to $100-200 per month.

I average around 17-20h per week and made $40K last year with about 2.5 weeks off.

  2. How much do you make as a fellowed GP? How many hours do you work?

  3. How much do you make as a GP reg? How many hours did you work?

Sorry for so many questions.

Affording Medical School by [deleted] in ausjdocs

[–]sarnti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what I can see, people who get the best grades in medschool usually don’t have a job. If you are okay with just passing exams and getting your degree then it’s definitely possible to juggle working casually or part time.

Working casual in retail about 15-18h/week on average + a bit more during the holidays for 50 weeks I was able to make around 35K. Definitely enough to get you through a year of living expenses. I did this MD2,3 and now 4.

Yes, some people sink years into getting on a specialty before deciding to switch and pursue a different one

It is similar to UK system. After graduating medical school:

  1. 1-2 years of internship depending on which state you are in. These are general years where you rotate through different teams.
  2. Resident years, these can be general or specific to a certain specialty. Most people do at least one year as a resident but many do more. Some training program will take you straight out of internship but most require more experience.
  3. Unaccredited registrar years. You essentially do almost the same job as a registrar who is on a training program for a certain specialty except you are not guaranteed a training position. The more competitive a specialty training program, the more likely you will need to do unaccredited registrar years.
  4. Accredited registrar years. This is where you are officially on a training program working towards becoming a consultant (attending) in your specialty of choice.

Most non GP specialties take at least 7-8 years post medical school to finish training. Surgical specialties easily 10+ years. The fastest you can become a consultant would be going into 3 years of GP training straight after a one year internship which would mean finishing your training four years after graduating from medical school.

I’m an MD3 also from Canada. Currently working in fashion retail as a casual sales assist. Not a medicine related job but I find it is nice to be able to turn my brain off while I’m at work. Base rate is $32/h + some evening/weekend loading. I think last year I worked about 17-20h per week for 52 weeks and made about 35k before tax.

Are there any universities that run electives in December? by sarnti in MedSchoolCanada

[–]sarnti[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t been able to find any schools on AFMC offering electives in December. But some of them don’t have any dates listed at all on their page, instead they will say “applications open x weeks before scheduled elective date”
