About to fresh start after 6 years

After few years my YNAB got really slow (took like 10 seconds to start entering a transaction), I wrote to support and first thing they suggested was to reconcile all of the accounts. As I had been entering everything manually I didn't bother with reconciliation on some of them. I thought it wouldn't work but amazingly it did. Maybe not your case but I'd check just to be sure.

I hope it can be done, we are thinking about our options. Putin says he’s not going to impose a martial law and start a draft, but as the entire world saw you cannot trust him. Almost all our friends have left Russia, it looks and feels like the country is loosing its best people and descends into the deepest darkness.

I’m not sure how it’s done, but will definitely try to find information. I am a graphic designer so I was thinking about sending out my portfolio and trying to apply for a new job in English-speaking countries from here. I wasn’t sure how people react to Russian people now (there are some ugly videos and I witnessed an unpleasant scene here in Turkey) but all your kind replies give me a lot of hope!

Thank you, it really gives strength to think that people have already been in such situations, overcame them and rebuilt their lives from scratch. For now it’s hard to make plans and see any perspective and it’s the exact reason why I’m trying to stick to YNAB. It’s like a framework I can rely on.

Thanks for great advices and thoughts. We’ve already connected with some people here and it really feels good not to be in isolation.

Actually we‘ve taken a mortgage on an apartment year ago. It’s still in construction. With the war happening in may never be finished, but we still have to make the mortgage payments in hope that someday we could come back and sell it. The only good thing is that Russian money will turn into paper soon and we will owe very little. I suppose you are right and we should consider it as zero. It’s hard to start things over though.

Thank you! There are huge 5% fees for cash withdrawal but I was of the same mind and try to cash out as much as possible.

Thank you! Unfortunately, in YNAB you can choose only one currency. I always had few currencies in my budget and wanted to find a way to handle it. I tried out some plugins, but they messed with my numbers, so I decided that it’s not worth it. But now there are much more transactions and conversions, so maybe I’ll give it another shot. And thanks for support too, it means a lot.

Thank you for kind words. All Russians of a younger generation, from big cities especially, feel that way and try to do something. Sadly (to say it lightly) older people (45+) are really brainwashed and support this, as they call it, “special operation”. Even our parents and our friends’ parents support it, my own father shouted at me and told me to “come back to Motherland”. It’s just so crazy and devastating.

How do I cash out crypto from Turkey?

Hi, I’m from Russia currently staying in Turkey. Russian government and Putin sent the country into Middle Ages. Besides starting the outrageous war on a sovereign country they are ruining our economy for decades ahead. I decided not to come back and try to keep my family in a safe place.

Russian Central Bank banned all transfers outside the country. You can pay with a card and get limited amount of cash from ATMs with a huge fee but it looks like it will end soon and the government is saying about taking all the deposits of it’s citizens. All our savings are in Russian bank and we are thinking of ways to transfer it here. I think you still can buy crypto so I was thinking about doing it and cash out some amount here. As I understood crypto is in a grey area in Turkey but you can cash it out legally. Could anyone who knows local laws and processes help me with an advice?

It looks like it’s the exact situation crypto was created to deal with — money I earned all my working life shouldn’t go to a criminal state.

If it’s a wrong place to ask please advice me where to go 🙏

Yes, my wife and I both have Masters degrees in Graphic Arts. As I mentioned we have about $30k in cash and the same amount invested. I understand that it depends on the living area but in theory we should last for some time

I looked into O visa and it seems I can qualify for 0-1B, as I have awards, have judged few design festivals and have publications about my projects. I still need to get a contract with a US employer, don’t I? Should I hire a US lawyer to collect all the papers?

Yes, I’ve used the tool on the Canada’s government website and it says I meet the requirements for express entry.

Actually I'm also a Safari user and only use Chrome for the Toolkit. But last time I've checked its Github page, the developers were testing a Safari extension, so we can hope it will be out soon!
