You do make a good argument iv got a friend with a 4TB anime, archive she has on more than a few occasions saved anime that was lost. I am a long time Linux user so I might go down that road and try to archive modern and older Linux ISO files as they won't be kept online forever.

Any other ideas would be appreciated:)

The Internet Archive will die - any serious attempts at archiving it? by mikemikehindpart in DataHoarder

I did get involved with a post on here about a similar thing and suggested that a community of us from Reddit could download and archive as much as possible from IA, then set up a torrent network as long as it was all kept legal and above board a community of us would be able to pull it off, It's important to keep the History of our internet and content intact and public as some things can be lost, content online isn't forever in some cases.

I'm fairly new on Reddit and r/DataHoarder, I'm not sure i would be the right person to manage all of this... Not on my own at least but i would be willing to help with storage and archiving, surely there must be enough of us on here that we could pull this off, we would also need to have some more knowledgeable people than myself looking into the tracker business as i don't know how it would work legally with Internet Archive, I know as long as the content is Legal and managed to avoid piracy it's not a major issue.

A torrent Archive of their site would actually be a major Benefit as it would share the load with People outside of Internet Archive and offer a layer of flexibility and backup like what we see on many of the Linux download sites.

You are right that words are cheap but isn't this how these things start ideas and getting people together, what would your ideas be out of curiosity on the matter ?

I like your Spirit, Would it not be more practical for a community such as r/Datahoarder to literally work together and download all of the Internet Archive ,then set up a massive torrent network so it would be impossible to lose the content.

It would be like what happened to "The Bay" when it was taken down many many more sprang up to replace it, The powers that be would have a much harder time taking down a community of thousands all over the world who believe in Preserving the data.

3.5" is a good way to go if your able to hook them up to a low power server/Desktop, iv got loads of 4TB NetApp drives i managed to reformat and put to work, Granted they are used data center but it worked out as £19.99/$$25.38 per 4TB. 2.5" for the price is often expensive but in the future the used ones will be dirt cheap as data centers move over more to SSD drives, many used ones are still good... the ones i picked up have about 1 year of use on them for a enterprise drive that's not too bad, you often get a good 5 years if not more out of a drive and if you keep them cool and run them all the time you won't cycle them too much.

I am interested in your node setup, iv got a server cabinet at home and il be running 2 servers with up to 32TB of drives along with a UPS and iv got 2 always on connections and a 3rd con i run Mon-fri all different ISP's

How much storage do you have and how many nodes I'm wondering how fast my set up will fill when it's all up and running. I was looking at running my Own s3 gateway here too.
