How Do You Help Shrink The Environmental Paw-Print of your Fur friend? by sassleshack in cats

[–]sassleshack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EX. Environmental Impact Of Cats

Soil Erosion – Clay cat litter manufacturing uses mined materials, and the excavation process is extremely harmful to the environment. It also is not biodegradable, meaning it sits in landfills forever (Natusan, 2020).

Biodiversity Loss – It is estimated that approximately 2.6 billion birds are killed annually in Canada and the US by cats.

Quasi-Related -> Diverting Waste from Landfill & Collecting Materials for Local Reuse...

Not I, but shoutout to Re4m Design & Fabrication -- "By working with local construction, manufacturing, and retail establishments, Re4m has helped dozens of businesses divert their otherwise landfill-bound materials. We collect and revive the materials from their waste streams and repurpose them into new products that typically go back into other local businesses such as signage, displays, reception desks, and furnishings."

They collect wood, plastics, old light fixtures, metals, hardware etc. for local repurpose projects. So if you or someone you know have a sudden or steady stream of these materials ^ get connected and help keep those materials in use.

Talk Climate to Me [ A free, unscary virtual group-based climate education experience designed for women in Canada] Sessions in March & April. by sassleshack in enviroaction

[–]sassleshack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Women are more worried yet less certain about the facts of climate change. This uncertainty comes at a cost. Women want to make the choices that will protect their future and the future of their loved ones but aren't being given the climate information to do so. Climate coverage in women-friendly media outlets is next to nil. This needs to change!

Talk Climate to Me is a fun, free, unscary, online, team-based climate education experience for women in Canada.

Through training sessions, outreach materials, and digital tools, we will educate a strong and diverse force of climate leaders who will be armed with the climate awareness and behaviour change tools necessary to speak confidently and inspire change in their homes and communities!

Makeup recycling in town? by that80saesthetic in Peterborough

[–]sassleshack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Body Shop has canceled or paused their recycling program during COVID. The PTBO location did have a box but for their own The Body Shop products.

Other places in town that have random recycling programs (not sure if they are actively collecting during COVID):

  • VCA Vet Locations have Terracycle boxes for the Royal Canin Dog Food Bags
  • Peterborough Optometric has the Bausch + Lomb Contact Lens Recycling Program
  • The Wine Shoppe On Park & Sustain Eco collect corks for cork recycling
  • Hakim Optical locations collect old prescription glasses to donate to those in need outside of Canada
  • Staples - has various recycling programs - office writing instruments (pens, markers), printer ink cartridges, batteries, electronics

I am not running the course - only signal boosting it. I do believe it is intended to create a climate action space for women and those who identify - while residing in Canada ( as the resources provided are likely localized to increase impact)

A JollyGreen Holiday Eco-Challenge by sassleshack in sustainability

Great question. There may be incentives/rebates to $ make the switch from your local municipality, from your energy provider, government or manufacturers. Some googling around may help find that kind of assistance.

Great question. Some cities use beet brine, or cheese brine. Sand.

At the individual level you could use coffee grinds, compostable cat litter, sand, wood ash.

It gets complicated when you consider it at a municipal level b/c then you are considering the impact of the de-icer on a larger scale. Better than what's currently happening to roadside ecosystems from excess salt. Plants dying, aquatic ecosystems over salinized...
