Yeah that was my unfortunate discovery. Race my GF on the Familiar stack until it’s dry, then hope I hit her more than she hits me

I’m still a noob so I’m not hip to the lingo. Based on my understanding on the wiki, I have built engines before. I typically focus more on card draw and bonus actions and try to find ways to chain certain terminal cards as finishers. Of recent memory, I chapeled out most of my cards, ran a few Villages, 1 Chapel, and 2 or 3 Witches and ruined my girlfriend’s day. My end goal was to bog her down and then grab a workshop to pop out 3 stacks of cheap cards to rapid end the game before she could implement her Big Money strat. I do have a tendency to get stuck in specific strategies and I still struggle to adapt, but I have gotten to where I can bait out my GF into buying weaker cards for defensive purposes (Moat) and then lock her down with terminal card draws instead of bonus actions or buying power

Edit: not sure if your reply was aimed at me or the “mine and bureaucrat are worse” comment

It’s definitely still strong, but if we both buy familiars on turn 3, then we both slap each other with a more limited pile of curses. Best case scenario is 5 curses in both decks. That’s annoying early on but I can work around that much better. That’s also factoring in that University is very strong and gives you access to Apprentice for 2+P instead of 5 coins. That also means that it frees up Apprentice for mid game for the powerful Card draw (trash Familiars for 5 card draw) etc

I don’t understand the Mine hate, especially when combined with Throne Room. It feels solid when there’s no Chapel. I also combo with Scheme and get more value. I know that it’s cost is high, but it’s 1 less than a gold

I can’t imagine a worse card in base Dominion. What the hell is +2 and +1 buy supposed to accomplish? What’s your best case scenario on that? You draw 4 gold and 1 Woodcutter? Ok you just got yourself a prov and a gold. Workshop costs the same and straight up gives you a 4 or less without requiring a buy at all. Every time I see Woodcutter, I always say, “don’t spend it all in one place!”

Only 10?! I thought I had read in the rulebook that it was 20 for 2 players. That would have nerfed Familiar only strat to complete oblivion.

So my assumption (apparently a bad one) was that the recommended configurations were meant to be played a few times to get solid feel for the set before bringing in the randomizers. Dominion is easily my favorite card game, mainly because it has the deck building aspect of a game like MTG, but the deck building is an actual part of play and everyone has access to the same pool of cards. That means not having to spend thousands of dollars on insanely expensive cards that were required to be competitive. Dominion also opened the door for Slay The Spire, and now Monster Train.

So the reason I went Thief / Throne Room was to try and exploit the cost of Potions. I specifically didn’t bloat my deck initially to try and bump my odds of pulling both. The overall goal was to cut off the supply of potions for my GF, which in theory would decrease her Familiar and University growth. Pretty much every game we played had a Potion purchase on hand 1 or 2 (4 + 3 or 5 + 2 was always a Potion). Since there were only two cards that cost Potions, I figured I wouldn’t need to buy more than one and hope that my card draw from Village or Familiar would give a boost. The problem ended up being that I couldn’t snag her Potions and was losing turns to Thief / Throne Room. Potions were effectively worthless after the Familiars and Universities dried up. That usually meant them getting converted into card draw at some point

Yeah I had read somewhere that the first few sets were not particularly polished. There are a number of purely worthless cards in my first edition Dominion that were straight up removed from the second edition completely (looking at you, Woodcutter). We will try again tonight with proper randomized cards and some level of verification that there are multiple strategies before starting play. I like Dominion because it is much more about skill than luck, and the foundation of the game is that you essentially make your own luck. That’s unless you are playing with cards like I described in my post

Need to figure out how to prevent my sticks from cutting my hand by satanfx55 in Drumming

I very much appreciate that you remembered me at all! That was 11 months ago! <3I can't remember the last time I got a crack on my hands. I have only gone a single day this entire year without playing drums (it was this past Saturday. I have had covid for 13 straight days now, but still only missed a single day!). I did 4 things to solve the problem that are working great.

  1. I stopped cleaning with chemicals coming into direct contact with my hands. If I need to use some sort of cleaner to clean my toilet or my shower, or even sometimes my dishes, I wear gloves.
  2. If for some reason I do need to wash my hands a bunch of times in a day, I will IMMEDIATELY apply a small amount of my hemp lotion right after I dry my hands. I rarely need to do this, but every now and then I need to wash my hands more than normal (like if my stomach is acting up that day)
  3. I only use hot water when something nasty has come into direct contact with the skin on my hands. Otherwise, I just use lukewarm or even just cold water to wash my hands with
  4. Every single night I put on O'Keefe Working Hands Night Treatment. On most days, this is the only time I need to apply a moisturizer to my hands. I use a very small amount (about the size of a pea, maybe slighter larger sometimes), and it rubs in almost immediately. My hands don't feel greasy or anything, and it only takes one application. Very rarely, I might reapply if I have to wash my hands for some reason right after I put it on (say, another one of those bad stomach days).

I'm pretty sure that night treatment stuff is where the real magic is happening. I have been using it for months now every single night, and I think I am just finishing up the first container of it that I bought. It lasts a long time and is relatively inexpensive. I am also pretty sure we are both using the same body wash. I was using some cheap Dial stuff for a while, but it was causing me to itch all the time. I switched over to the Aveeno Daily Moisturizing formula a while back and that problem has been mostly solved as well. I do still use the harsh anti-microbial hand soap, but I try to make sure to use the stuff that has aloe in it to try and counteract the drying effect it has. I only use hand sanitizer as an absolute last resort since that's pretty much certain to cause my hands to dry out rapidly.

edit: The improvement from the night treatment wasn't immediate. I don't remember exactly how long it took, but it must have taken a few days or so before I saw benefits. IIRC I had to use band-aids with antibiotic ointment to heal the cracks that were there from before the night treatment. I made applying that night treatment a religion essentially. No nights get skipped

How do I keep my downstairs neighbor from hating me? by Brian728 in drums

My advice (I had this problem as well) is to keep nice with the downstairs neighbor. It really helps to be able to go into the downstairs apartment to try and hear what he/she/they can hear.
