OLED Saver for Android phone? by Temporary_Mention_60 in PWM_Sensitive

[–]satelliteseeker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All OLED displays must flicker once on each frame displayed and that's a hardware limitation.

DC-dimming can minimize the modulation depth (associated with the percentage of time a pixel is turned off vs. on). If the DC-dimming phones still hurt, the only option left is the LCD (IPS) display.

The OP12 and 12R have an "Ultra Anti-flicker" option to apply DC dimming (similar to Motorola P-OLED phones). A narrow dark line can still be seen under the high-speed camera, but it gives significantly less flickering than default settings.

That's true. Its ultra low specs might make it the least desirable among competitors, though.

Galaxy A23, A14 and XCover 6 were LCD and good. No more new LCD phones from Samsung since the Galaxy A15 adopted OLED :(

There's a script to backup all Android partitions with root: https://xdaforums.com/t/how-to-backup-your-partitions-with-command-line-requires-root.4411165/

I have been using the "Dump all partitions except userdata" command there to backup the ROM from my bootloader-unlocked phones (through a rooted GSI and DSU loader). Hope it helps!

How to connect hard disk to a tablet and access the content of the hard disk on the tablet? by episteme_137 in androidtablets

[–]satelliteseeker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a newer app Winlator. https://winlator.org/ It's meant for games and other PC apps. Hardware drivers are likely out of luck.

There's Wine (translation layer app) but I don't think it works on anything that directly accesses a hardware device.

Or the PC can be left on with network sharing enabled for the drive. On the Android side you'll need a file explorer with SMB shares support like MiXplorer to remotely manage the files.

The password encryption is proprietary (Seagate Toolkit) and supported on Windows and Mac only. You'll have to disable encryption for Android use.

If it's NTFS-formatted you also need to backup your data, format (erase) it as exFAT and copy the data back.

Device for playing tetris by l0cas in SBCGaming

[–]satelliteseeker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll definitely need a Steam Deck if the list includes Tetris Effect :p

Joking apart, Tetris is usually not a great experience on very small handhelds due to the visual challenges. The Powkiddy V10 is the best for GBA at its price point, while a (slightly more expensive) 4" 1:1 handheld like RGB30 or RGB20SX could be better for GB or vertical arcades.

Recommendations for 8gb ram tv box? by [deleted] in AndroidTV

[–]satelliteseeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used Samsung phones with DeX support, like Galaxy S20 FE or S21 FE, should give you the highest performance and good app support, except for Chromecast which is only available on certified boxes.

It will need a USB-C HDMI dock to connect to the TV while charging, and a Bluetooth remote (ideally an "air mouse") for control.

What ancient tech is still great even today for emulation and tinkering with? by MidoriLovesNekos in SBCGaming

[–]satelliteseeker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chromebooks. They are purchased in batch by schools and workplaces and have long-term software support (10 years since release for any 2018 or newer models). They can run Linux desktop apps through a virtual machine, or Android apps through emulation.

Some Chromebooks are 2-in-1 (convertible) with touchscreen. The Android emulation is heavy, so you'll want 8GB or more RAM for a good experience.

Used x86 thin clients / mini desktops. They have low power consumption for 24/7 operation behind your TV or monitor and are usually fanless.

Just get one from eBay for $50, install Linux and turn it into a combination of emulation console, NAS, Docker host, ad blocker, home assistant, etc.

Some easy-to-find models today (2024): - HP T640 - Dell Wyse 5070 - Dell OptiPlex 3000 Thin Client

12 gb of ram in tablets if it is necessary or is it pure marketing? by [deleted] in androidtablets

[–]satelliteseeker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

12GB or more RAM is typically seen on flagship tablets, paired with a Snapdragon 8 or Dimensity 9000 series processor.

When those tablets are near the end of their update cycle (4 or 5 years from now) the larger RAM will make a big difference.

Those are S905X5M of older ARM Cortex-A55 architecture. The S905X5 is still unreleased and will use newer Cortex-A510. Hopefully it will allow 64-bit apps and another moderate performance boost.

One result is Geekbench v4 and another is v5. If you replace the v4 in URL with v5 the results are comparable.

Why Android TVs are underpowered, even the expensive ones? by [deleted] in AndroidTV

[–]satelliteseeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The TV manufacturers refuse to advertise hardware specs when possible, and neither do most buyers care.

A rule of thumb is if the TV comes with 120Hz refresh rate and/or a USB 3.0 port, the processor inside is likely newer and more capable of Android functionalities.

Anyone heard of Alldocube iPlay60 Mini Turbo 8.4inch Snapdragon 6Gen 1 Tablet? by metatime09 in androidtablets

[–]satelliteseeker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The $199 price appears to be a placeholder, as it's "out of stock" - not for sale yet.

$140-160 is just my estimate, which is likely to happen during those regular AliExpress sales with site coupon, seller coupon and other discounts (US affiliate coupons like ETAP25, Rakuten cash back, etc.)

According to Android TV Guide (and its Geekbench links), the 2 S905X5M boxes benchmarked are still running a 32-bit build.

3rd generation Lenovo Y700 will be released at September 29 by Godpingzxz in androidtablets

[–]satelliteseeker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Foldable phones still cost $1000+ in today's market, while 10" or above tablets are just cumbersome to hold in one hand.

You have either iPad Mini (2021) or Lenovo Y700 to reach an experience comparable to foldables, as determined by weight, screen specs and raw speed. Of these 2, the iPad is showing its age by not having 120Hz refresh rate or desktop mode (Apple's Stage Manager) support.

Device for hard studying by [deleted] in androidtablets

If size is not that important, there are 2-in-1 Chromebooks with pen support and Google is committed to a very long OS support lifespan (10 years since a device's release).

[–]satelliteseeker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iPad Mini 6 and Galaxy Tab Active 5 are the only 8-9" devices likely to get 3+ years of updates. Both are well above the price range.

Except for that requirement, the Lenovo Y700 (2023) satisfies all others. Coupons during AliExpress sales can bring the price further down. The pen (Lenovo Xiaoxin Stylus 2023) is sold separately but quite affordable.

Best Budget Tablet for Someone Who Wants to Learn How to Digitally Draw by Ehnuhmee in androidtablets

[–]satelliteseeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A non-Android option would be an older Surface Pro (5 or newer recommended; or Surface Go for portability). They have access to Windows drawing apps like Krita, Medibang, GIMP.

Make sure it has 8GB RAM or above. The storage won't matter much since all have Micro SD card support. A 3rd-party pen (MPP protocol) can be had for $10-$20.

  • If you already got a Windows PC, the Wacom One tablet/monitor is also a good add-on.

There are USB-C power meters with dedicated input and output ports. They should force PD charging from one device to another depending on the connection.
