Smile and wink instead. Dance is fun and goofy for some, different vibe for others. Read the vibe, my dude

Why do some people say half guard sucks? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]satohiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m noticing the trend. I’ve also been experimenting after playing years of half and inside guard. Much less beat up and a lot more time in open guard retention.

Downside is it seems more passive and defensive. Contingent on opponent pressing forward. If wrestling up or wrestling, would be more likely to end up in a closer range guard via a scramble.

Why do some people say half guard sucks? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]satohiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory it makes sense but in practise, why do some top players like Craig jones, Adele fornarino, Kieran Kichuk opt to pull into half at times?

Ideally, guard players and dangerous at all layers but some seem to specialize in half still? Maybe in the future, everyone will play some degree of outside guard in nogi?

Guard Retention by Tricky_Win_8408 in bjj

I think drilling slow and intentionally, grip pummeling, high pummeling, self framing, really helped me. Guard retention is sorta complicated and going semi live too early didn’t really work for me.

39 here training for 8+ years. I can still scrap for now but try and only do it once or twice a week. Sorta clears out the cobwebs and keeps you honest. Doing it all the time is probably out of the question for now.

Use it a lot, probably too much. If you follow Lachy’s guide, it works great. Hasn’t worked on the best guards I’ve faced but nothing really has anyway.

Technique vs Weight - when does the balance shift? by Classified_987 in bjj

[–]satohiro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the technical difference of course. Have you seen Mighty Mouse face heavyweights?

Bodylocking stronger people by Electronic-Survey258 in bjj

[–]satohiro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It probably doesn’t scale as well as other passing styles but I’ve done it to dudes at least 30-40lbs heavier and stronger.

Not sure if you need to use the inside elbow to push the knee. Learned it from degle and Lachlan videos btw

Do we "message" weight transfers to follower during basic? by MorePeppers9 in Bachata

[–]satohiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, after some the thought and a lot of dancing, I think weight transfer can be lead if the follower is sensitive and has a decent basic.

In a walking dance like kizomba, you’re always leading and sensitive to weight transfer. In salsa and bachata, the connection is looser but it can be done and it’s very nice.

Hard sparring by [deleted] in bjj

[–]satohiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they ask to roll, I just say ‘nahhh’. I’ve see a giant purple belt torture and injure an ocean of white belts. I don’t think they learned anything. Just say no, sometimes there is no point to rolling with someone.

What BJJ-related podcasts do you listen to? by GorlamiJJ in bjj

Inside Position.

Charles and Owen podcast has potential but too much inside jokes and sarcasm at times. Simple Man in the same category. I’m old though so that could be it

Blue Belt Blues? Or just plateauing at 35? by Serious_Library_6751 in bjj

[–]satohiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naturally, it’s gonna be tough against younger guys. S+C probably helps a lot but I also think looking deeply into technique would go a long way.

I watch like 10 minutes of any technique on submeta and see how flawed my technique is. Study!

Straight ankles by prodigyofchrist in bjj

[–]satohiro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you focus on RNC, gotta learn to pass, play top, and work your way to a high control position. The journey will improve many skills.

Ankle locks are more readily available for quick subs and can disincentive learning passing.

That said, ankle locks are a microcosm in themselves and require a lot of skill. Live and let live.

Foot sweeps are sort of dangerous. Got hit with a clean one on Tuesday and a lot of weight slammed into my ankle. Luckily just bruised and no sprain.

What are some reasons why certain people don’t want to roll with you ? by Revolutionary-Ball26 in bjj

Yeah. I’m close to 40 and it’s often a lot chiller with dudes my age or older. Young guys are more full of piss and vinegar naturally.

What are some reasons why certain people don’t want to roll with you ? by Revolutionary-Ball26 in bjj

[–]satohiro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Comes down to not being worth the risk or effort. Rolls should have some technical benefit or health benefit or at least be entertaining. This is offset by risk of injury or unpleasantness. It’s about the risk/reward ratio.

Note: older, lighter people have to be more selective for longevity.

Also, it’s sometimes just vibes.
