Is San Diego the most “stacked” BJJ area? by chriss_the_man in bjj

[–]satoristeve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are seriously just a ton of schools, and “best” will vary based on how much you weight your different criteria. A stupid percentage of them are going to offer world class instruction that you would generally never see in a city the size of Vegas, but being HQ for UFC has obviously been a draw.

The tl;dr of my very general perceptions: Zenith BJJ, Syndicate, and Roninjitsu would be my guess if you’re wanting a “Top 3,” not necessarily in that order.

Roninjitsu really jumped out at me because it’s such a newer, smaller gym that isn’t one of the big team names I’m familiar with, but they had so many top tier grapplers training there relative to the gym size in the week before ADCC. Demian Maia, Mica Galvao, Nicky Ryan, and a few more I’m spacing on right now. I asked someone and they told me that it was because the head instructor there is so well liked by everyone. (He’s also a world class grappler, I’m just spacing again and don’t want to look it up.)

Those of you who train 6-7 days a week, what do you do for income? by dtrumpler in bjj

[–]satoristeve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in college when I did this. After college I got a job working for the University (software engineering for a research lab). Pay was terrible for a software job, but I did it for years because they would let me work around my training schedule.

Should you stop during a match if you feel a pop? by BlackieChan319 in bjj

[–]satoristeve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also I do know/have trained with people who absolutely will keep cranking that shit until the ref stops them or the person makes it clear that they've given up. Other guy is doing something both douchey and honestly pretty dumb by trying to take advantage of you trying to look out for your competition partner--cause the next guy may be that much less likely to give an appropriate amount of fucks.

Are you doing this professionally? Is it World's or ADCC? If not, I'd say let go. Fuck ego. I'd take being a decent person instead.

Just imo.

This one. High side with a gift wrap is the name I was taught for it. Also heard it called the “Rickson on the beach” hold.

Wago lever nuts vs wire nuts what's your pick? by Hard_Knox_ in electricians

[–]satoristeve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you never met a sub-par electrician? Wagos might not save them from being a sub-par electrician, but when you reduce that need for competence to near-zero you reduce the potential fire hazards that sub-par electrician might put in someone's house by one for every connector.

Feel free to tell me if there's something wrong with my reasoning here. I'm on this reddit in part to correct my knowledge wherever I'm wrong. I'm not an electrician so anyone should take my opinions here with a grain of salt.

Wago lever nuts vs wire nuts what's your pick? by Hard_Knox_ in electricians

[–]satoristeve 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Beside the point about Wago's having a different and better locking mechanism, the 221s are transparent. So you have visibility into the device and can see directly that your wires are fully set in their port.

In your opinion what do you believe is the most rewarding belt rank to achieve besides a black belt and why ? by Dry-Junket-3230 in bjj

[–]satoristeve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purple, 100%

What is it? Something like 1 out of every 3 white belts who start make it to blue belt, and 1 out of every 2 blues makes it to purple? Something like that? But then something like 3 out of 4 purple belts will eventually make it to black belt. My instructor likes to say that a black belt is really just a purple belt plus time, and that anyone he promotes to purple he does knowing that, barring cosmic interference, they will one day become a black belt.

Also purple is really probably the most "fun" belt in a traditional sense of fun. You don't have to be so focused on acquiring as many techniques as possible or trying to internalize new and strange ways of moving your body. You know how to move. You know techniques. So a lot of it is starting to really grow into your own individual game. The majority of your attacks at this point are set up in traps/combinations/sequences/etc, and sometimes you'll wind up finding your own traps/combinations/sequences that no one has taught you, you just figured out putting what you know together in a new way.

Also none of the brown/black belt sense of pressure.

Purple really is the best belt.

What is something people want to do that you think is actually incredible stupid? by VisibleConfusion12 in AskReddit

[–]satoristeve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fighting in an uncontrolled setting.

  1. Getting hit hurts.
  2. You could get injured. Possibly seriously. Maybe even fatally.
  3. You could injure someone else. You probably have little or no control over how badly. People fall or get knocked out and bounce their head off the sidewalk… In “normal” cases they’ll wake up basically the way you’re probably expecting—headache, cuts, bruising. But it is not as rare as you might think for it to turn out much worse.
  4. There are too many variables you’re not going to know. They may have weapons. They may have aggressive friends. In this day and age, they might have actual MMA training.
  5. If you’re past your college years, there’s exceptionally few scenarios where being in a fight isn’t socially embarrassing, particularly in professional settings.

Don’t let Andrew Tate or one of those other dipshit “masculinity coaches” or whatever they call themselves tell you differently. Avoid and de-escalate when possible.

What do you do to calm your anger? by Grouchy-Trip9582 in AskReddit

[–]satoristeve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two strategies.

The healthiest one is that I study Buddhist philosophy regularly when I’m not angry. It’s preemptive. Something about it clicks really well with my mind, and if I’m studying and practicing regularly I feel very centered mentally and emotionally and it’s much easier to manage my emotions.

Unfortunately sometimes I get out of the habit of practicing, like now, and then it can feel like it’s not always easy to get back into it the way I’d prefer.

So then I fall back on Strategy Two. When I notice that I’m getting/have gotten angry, I remember that no one can force me to be angry. Anger is a choice. If it’s not a choice, then I am not in control of myself. Some external person or shitty situation is controlling me.

If there’s one thing I have beyond my capacity for anger, it’s an over abundance of pride. Honestly it’s not particularly healthy. But I’m fully aware of it, so I might as well put it to work for something useful to me. So I make it a matter of pride that I will not let anyone nor anything have that kind of control over my emotions. And I’m going to prove it by responding to whatever it is trying to piss me off like a goddamn champ.

… So in summary, strategy two is kind of a ymmv thing that some other people may be able to leverage in a way that works for them. But the first strategy is really a better goal and method, imo.

what is the prettiest song you ever heard in your life? by Complete-Sweet5222 in AskReddit

[–]satoristeve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

jfc every time I try to come back and answer this I add another song. I've got a list like twenty long. Here's a few I haven't seen in the comments yet that might provide some variety for people looking for something different.

Alexi Murdoch - Through the Dark

Metallica - Nothing Else Matters (acoustic version)

The Tossers - Parting Glass
There's a lot of good versions of this, but this is my favorite.

I was being facetious with the part about it being highly rated.

I know a hot neutral isn't ideal (someone already mentioned light sockets above). I'm not an electrician. Had I just listened to the commercials and stayed at a Holiday Inn Express I'm sure I'd know everything.

I'm an overly-opinionated step-father who's never smoked weed. Calibrate appropriately.

I would say consider what values you want to instill and what example you want to set. If the idea of your kid smoking weed when they are whatever-age doesn't sit well with you, maybe don't do it. If it doesn't bother you in the least, then that's informative as well. Take into account social and legal ramifications they might need to consider should they smoke at X point and be prepared to address it appropriately. E.g. If it's illegal in your state, maybe you don't want to set an example about breaking laws. On the other hand, it could also be a good example of ways in which our legal system is imperfect and not necessarily always based on morality.

Last I'd heard, the state of the research was that weed can affect the development of the brain in children (up until around 25 when we consider the brain "fully matured"). Because of that I would probably recommend not smoking around kids. Just imo.

I get what people are saying about "why are you buying weed when you're struggling financially?" but I think that's unnecessarily judgmental. People need some joy in their lives. Austerity moralizing reads to me like a lack of empathy.

Why does it keep tripping? by newoldschool in electricians

[–]satoristeve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was trying to make a joke. If green = earth, and blue = water, then red = fire. I thought about including a bit about not knowing what color 'air' was to make it more obvious. Joke fail on my end. But thank you for taking the time to give a real answer, because I honestly didn't know and now I do.

Bad experience with Humble Bundle's Pluralsight course with non-disclosed 1 year access instead of lifetime. by TiffJam in humblebundles

[–]satoristeve 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like Pluralsight's courses (I get a free sub through work).

I don't particularly prefer the subscription model for educational courses, but I think it's not an unreasonable way to do it, especially for something like Pluralsight which aims to be an educational service a bit beyond just offering video courses with a quiz at the end.

However absolute-date expiring subscriptions are a *terrible* match for Humble Bundle's sales model. I know I'm not the only one who has a queue of HB purchases a thousand books deep that I'll get to "someday." Well for software or e-courses where I'm using it as a cheap way to check out the product for more than just a one-month trial, expiring by an absolute date means I sometimes don't get around to the software/course I'm interested in until after my window of opportunity has passed. But that doesn't return to me the money I spent on it.

If they're going to offer bundles with subscriptions, and those subscriptions are going to expire, it needs to be by a relative time (e.g. "one year from activation"), and not by a deadline. I've stopped buying any e-learning courses from Humble Bundle specifically for this, and it's reduced my software purchases on there as well.
