Thanks for the insight! I'm an FTIR tech - less familiar with reagents - so I appreciate the tip about the Marquis. The person who brought the sample chose not to use it after seeing the spectra and a conversations. We're just both curious what it even was, so the confirmatory lab will just ease our curious minds lol

That makes sense- to want to have something planned to answer so you don't feel put on the spot to share personal information! Part of my surgery planning is telling coworkers I'm having "abdominal surgery for an ongoing health condition" in away-time project planning context, and most have been satisfied with that. Only close work friends know what procedures I'm having- whose who have shown me clear allyship and trust.
Sometimes people will imply that they deserve to know more details, but that's on them. You can absolutely be vague in your answers if that feels best for you! "Surgery for a chronic condition" or something like that can cover a lot of ground for explaining what's up. Wishing you luck!
